“Something else to celebrate is the ingenuity, innovation and creativity within the DIY industry, which is what the annual DIY Week Awards are all about”
Founded in 1874
Plenty of people have found solace in DIY during the past few months of lockdown, with many from younger age groups picking up tools and tackling jobs around the home for the first time, which is great news for the industry. According to a recent survey by marketing agency, Democracy, 56 per cent of those aged 25-34 and 49 per cent of those under 24 say they have completed home improvement tasks since Covid-19 restrictions were put in place. For some it’s become a new hobby, but for others it has no doubt been through necessity, when restrictions meant it was difficult to have a tradesperson enter the property, or due to financial constraints, but there are also those who’ve just decided to take the plunge and give it a go. The one thing that this pandemic crisis has provided many people with is more time at home, allowing them to take on projects they may have been putting off and finish jobs they started. I speak from experience on this as working from home during the crisis has saved me from the daily office commute and provided some spare time to tidy up my workshop, finish off some old projects, as well as start a few new ones. Also, having the whole family at home has encouraged them to get involved and learn some new and vital skills that they wouldn’t normally have had the time, inclination, or quite frankly, the interest in doing before. So we have to take some positives from this crisis and make the best of it and hope that this newfound interest is something that’s being repeated in many other homes up and down the country and will mean our industry has an even brighter future ahead. Something else to celebrate is the ingenuity, innovation and creativity within the DIY industry, which is what the annual DIY Week Awards are all about. Sadly, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we weren’t able to hold a live event this year, but I’m very pleased to say we were still able to judge all the amazing entries received and in this issue’s special awards supplement we can finally reveal the winners. As usual the standard of entries was incredibly high, which gave our judging panels plenty to ponder and discuss, but in the end they were able to decide on some very deserved winners. I’d like to thank the entrants, sponsors, judges and all those involved in helping to make this year’s awards such a success, despite the obvious obstacles and difficulties faced, and congratulate all those who made it onto the shortlists and give credit to the winners. Find out which companies and products came out on top in the supplement and we look forward to bringing you another successful live event next year.
