ON TEST HANDS ON

This month, in our new regular feature, the DIY Week team has been trying out some more of the latest hand tools and accessories released by Toolstation under its Minotaur Tools brand, some new Kasp security products, as well as an old Black & Decker favourite.

Saw for all seasons

A reciprocating saw is a useful tool to have in your armoury as it can tackle a multitude of tasks and reach places other saws just can’t. Most follow a very similar design that we are all be familiar with, but there’s one that stands out as being a bit different, and as such, makes it even more useful. I’m talking about the Black & Decker Scorpion, which is described by the manufacturer as a ‘powered handsaw’. It’s been around for a while now, so it’s

far from new or innovative, but it’s one of the most versatile tools in my workshop and one I find myself reaching for when nothing else will quite do the job. Supplied with three blades, the Scorpion can be used as a jigsaw or handsaw and makes light work of cutting a variety of materials, including wood, metal and plastic. Its 400W motor isn’t the most powerful and 10mm stroke far from the longest, yet there isn’t much that will stop the Scorpion.

Safe and secure

With demand for combination security products increasing, leading brand Kasp, renowned for padlocks and security products you can trust, offers a wide range of high quality combination padlocks and combination key safes to suit all requirements. Perfect for a whole host of outdoor and indoor applications, the Kasp combination range also enables customers to maximise sales by offering additional price competitive options.

The new Kasp Combination Key Safes are designed to provide discreet, secure, wall mounted storage for keys and entry cards, allowing authorised access to a multitude of domestic, commercial and factory buildings. The 600 Combination Key Safe (90mm) (K60090D) features a durable weather resistant construction ideal for outdoor or indoor use, providing wall-mounted storage for up to five keys and entry cards. A tough die-cast body is powder coated to protect against corrosion. Its matt black door provides discreet product mounting, with a resettable four digit combination dial for convenience and security.

Ideal for indoor situations such as offices,

warehouses, industrial settings, or domestic environments such as blocks of flats, the Kasp 601 Combination Key Safe Compact (75mm) (K60175D) is a robust, compact combination key safe that will safely store two to three keys. An easy open mechanism enables fast, simple access and a resettable four digit combination dial offers added security.

On the level

I recently used it to cut through an eight- inch tree stump that nothing else would touch and it left a very neat finish too. It also came to the rescue when I needed to finish cutting down an old cheery tree that had already bunted a chainsaw. The fact that it’s stood the test of time and is still around when many other power tools have come and gone is testament to its clever design and versatility. I’m sure Black & Decker have sold many thousands of them and I hope it continues to be available for a while longer yet.

Toolstation recently launched its ‘Minotaur Tools’ brand, a new range of core hand tools that have the quality and features of big-name trade brands, but are available at a more affordable price. With around 50 lines in the range, from trowel sets to high velocity claw hammers, Toolstation believes the Minotaur brand will have strong appeal to tradespeople who want hardworking and reliable hand tools, whilst keeping a careful eye on their spend. One of the new tools is this 250mm ‘Scaffold Spirit Level’. Featuring a die-cast aluminium frame for on-site durability, it has a magnetic base for hands free use when required. Accuracy is claimed to be within 1.0mm and it has three precise vials of 45°, 90° and 180°. This pocket-friendly level is certainly handy to keep in the toolbox and seems pretty accurate in use. Although it’s aimed at scaffolders, it will also come in handy for DIYers looking for a compact and strong level that can take some abuse and still provide accurate results. And at just £6.99 from Toolstation, it seems like a bit of a bargain.

A premium weather resistant combination padlock, the new Kasp Series 114 Marine Combination Padlock (30mm/40mm) three or four dial padlock is easy to use and maintain. This durable padlock features a resettable combination, its mirrored chromed solid brass body and stainless steel shackle providing superior corrosion resistance, whilst rust-free internal components offer an extra level of protection against corrosion. The Kasp Series 116 Disc Combination Padlock 70mm combines superior quality with a closed disc shackle design for increased security against shackle attack. A resettable combination provides added convenience and a four digit code offers extra security. A hardened steel shackle offers protection against hacksaw and cropping attacks and a unique powder coated body shields against corrosion.
