Always look on the bright side


As always, this past fortnight has seen its fair share of anxiety-inducing news stories, from footfall declines and sales slumps on the high street, to high vacancy rates, store closures, yet more Brexit angst and plenty of death and destruction. It’s enough to make you want to retreat back under your duvet – at least until after the dreaded October 31 anyway. But, in the midst of all that doom and gloom, there are also some retail success stories out there. Of course, you’ve got your usual suspects, with Toolstation, Screwfix and Wilko opening stores left, right and centre but this issue also shines a light on builders’ merchant Thompson & Parkes, which is expanding with a brand new 7000sq m DIY retail store in Stourport.


Add to that a conversation with Homebase CEO Damian McGloughlin this week, who


assured us the business is going for growth and got the DIY Week team fired up about the future of Homebase, with new ideas and areas of expansion in the pipeline. And, whilst the Wyevale chain continues to shrink at a pace – good news for other garden


retailers out there, no doubt, but bad news for those who work from the business and don’t know what the future holds – it has also given a number of other smaller operators the opportunity to grow their estates by snapping up some of the centres up for grabs. Just this week, family-run favourite Hillier took on another centre, adding to the four it had already acquired from Wyevale and growing its portfolio to 17. Even e-commerce trader cmostores.com has been shouting about its record-breaking


growth and, although not a retailer, Stax’s acquisition of supplier MP Smith will no doubt prove of great benefit to its customers and, more importantly, highlights another bout of investment in the industry. It might be tough out there but there are still shards of light in the darkness.
