Huws Gray buys Exall and Jones

The Huws Gray Group has made its sixth acquisition of 2021, with the purchase of independent builders merchant Exall and Jones Ltd, based in Swansea. Founded in 1984 by David Jones and the late John Exall, the builders and timber merchants has served a broad customer base, from DIY’ers and self-builders through to housing developers, major contractors, and local authorities across South Wales.

Matthew Owen, head of acquisitions for the Huws Gray Group, said: “2021 has been a particularly busy year for us and it’s fantastic to be welcoming a merchant based in the heart of one of Wales’ most vibrant cities.” He added: “Exall and Jones is a third-generation family business with a great reputation, and we want to continue to build on the fantastic work they have done here. We’re looking forward to working with the existing team to develop the site and continue to serve the area with first- class service as Huws Gray Swansea. It’s great to be back in Wales and we welcome the opportunity it presents to launch our presence in the South of the country.”

Jones said: “We are sure that we are leaving our loyal staff and customers in good hands. We’ve been fortunate to have some excellent customers and we know that they will continue to receive the same great service as we join the Huws Gray Group.“

IBMG adds to regional strengths with three acquisitions

The Independent Builders Merchant Group has added three businesses across its south east region, strengthening its heavyside and plumbing and heating offer. On the plumbing and heating side, Sussex Plumbing Supplies and DW Burns, in Surrey, have been acquired and will run under Matt Bland, managing director of IBMG’s heating and plumbing division. A family run plumbers’ merchant and bathroom showroom, supplying both trade and retail customers across Surrey, DW Burns was established in 1963 and has trade counters in Woking and Farnham, plus an extensive showroom in Woking. Toby Hoyle, Burns’ owner, will remain in the business. He said: “The team and I are delighted to join IBMG. Both companies share a commitment to the highest standards of customer service and an independent ethos, which makes this partnership a very good fit. Without doubt, this is the best step to ensure that Burns will go from strength to strength in the future.”

Established in 2000, Sussex Plumbing Supplies has its headquarters in Polegate, East

group. Partnering with IBMG will facilitate this growth and we look forward to continuing this success story together.”

Sussex, and has seven trade counters and four bathroom, heating and kitchen showrooms across Sussex and Kent. Glenn Vinall, SPS’ owner and Managing Director will continue to lead the business. He said: “The team and I are proud of all that we have built to date but we recognise that our company will be able to achieve much more as part of a larger

The group has also acquired Perrys Builders Merchants Limited, in Plymouth. Perrys, which was established in 2000, will join RGB and Mark Periton, Perrys’ founder, will continue with the business working with Andy Gamble and Kevin Fenlon, RGB’s managing director and chief executive respectively, to grow RGB’s presence in Plymouth and the South Hams area.

Following its recent merger with Grant & Stone, these acquisitions continue IBMG’s strategy of developing its divisions through a combination of acquisition, new site development and organic growth

Henshaws adds new branch

Greater Manchester-based Henshaws has taken over a new site in Rochdale, with the acquisition of R&M Roofing & Building Supplies.

The 36 year old Henshaws is a member of independent buying group h&b, and is already well- known in its original Stretford base, especially for roofing supplies. So when managing director Adrian Shelley heard from a h&b supplier that R&M was available, the synergies were obvious: a large site, a specialism in roofing, a strong independent ethos, and an established team. At the same time, R&M was

keen to team up with a properly independent merchant with strong community values. Shelley says that the membership of h&b was invaluable when it came to rebranding and restocking the new Rochdale depot. “We called h&b and they were straight on the case. A fellow member across the country helped with bricks and blocks, the h&b HQ team were also incredibly helpful at a busy and stressful time. To feel that support, as an independent merchant, is invaluable,” he says. Henshaws is also using h&b deals and assistance from h&b

suppliers to build different aspects of the Henshaws business: developing the company’s landscaping offering for instance which has shown strong growth in the last 18 months. “We are using h&b’s expertise, relationships and skills to leverage our success at this exciting time for the Henshaw business.”
