Sir James Cleverly to give Keynote speech at BMF Members Day conference

The RT Hon Sir James Cleverly MP, one of the few Cabinet Ministers to have served as Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary, will be a headline speaker at the BMF Members Day Conference. Cleverly’s career stretches over the military, business, local and national politics, and he remains a serving officer in the territorial army. He joined national politics in 2015 when elected as Conservative MP, joining the Cabinet in 2019 as Education

Secretary. His long tenure in government meant he worked under three Prime Ministers, Boris Johnson. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Whilst Home Secretary he was responsible for policing,

counter-terrorism, immigration policy and national crime agency. As Foreign Secretary, he led UK diplomacy during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Following 2024’s general election, Cleverly was a front runner for leadership of the

Conservative Party but was narrowly eliminated in the final votes. Earlier this year he was awarded a knighthood for “political and public service” John Newcomb, BMF CEO, said “We are delighted that Cleverly will address BMF members this year. He is one of the country’s senior politicians and his experience in business and military adds to his insight into global domestic politics”

BMF Members Day will be held on September 17-18 at the Hilton Metropole at the NEC in Birmingham.

Barratt Redrow rolls out The Pallet LOOP nationwide

The Pallet LOOP has announced that Barratt Redrow, the UK’s largest housebuilder, is rolling out LOOP’s pallet collection service across all of its sites nationwide.

The move comes as the number of green LOOP pallets entering the building materials supply chain increases week on week and has surpassed one million pallets issued to date. By the end of June 2025, The Pallet LOOP (part of BSW Group) estimates that Barratt Redrow will have used its service to return in excess of 400,000 pallets across all its sites nationwide – preventing them

from entering the waste chain. All pallets delivered to Barratt Redrow sites (white and green), which are suitable for reuse, will now be sent back to The Pallet LOOP – with all of the company’s housebuilding sites already set up and actively using the service. John Adams, group

procurement director at Barratt Redrow, said: “In a short space

of time, some of our biggest building materials suppliers have moved to using The Pallet LOOP’s circular economy pallets. The Pallet LOOP solves multiple issues for our business – providing a standardised range of strong, reusable pallets, and consolidating pallet returns via one easy-to-use system. This is helping us reduce waste and cut carbon, while also enhancing efficiencies across our operations.”

For every green LOOP pallet returned for reuse, The Pallet LOOP will provide the returning company with a financial PayBack of up to £4 per pallet.

Lawsons

celebrates Fair Tax week as first gold standard builders merchant

Family-run builders merchants Lawsons Group marked its first Fair Tax week last month, having been the first ever builders merchant to be awarded the Fair Tax Mark earlier this year. Fair Tax Week is an

opportunity for businesses to step forward and say what they pay with pride, and UK councils to declare their support for the economic contribution this makes locally.

Over the last decade the Lawsons has contributed £14.9m of Corporation Tax payments, £18.9m of employers national insurance and £62.5m of VAT.

Chris Harrison, group finance director at Lawsons, said: “As a significant player in the builders merchant sector, it is only right that we should publicly demonstrate our approach to paying our fair share of tax in full and at the right time.
