BMF expands team with two key appointments

The BMF has further strengthened its in-house team with two key appointments.

Kerry Wilson took up her post as Learning and Development Manager on Monday 29th November, the same day as Daniel Hodder joined as Policy and Public Affairs Advisor.

Kerry’s appointment coincides with the BMF’s appointment of LEAP as the new full- service providers of the BMF Apprenticeship Plus service. As Learning and Development Manager, Kerry will champion and manage the enhanced service, helping to promote and support apprenticeship growth

for the long-term benefit of the merchant sector. Kerry joined the BMF from Travis Perkins, where she was a Lead Apprenticeship Coach, creating and facilitating

Portsmouth clean air zone now in force

Portsmouth City Council has implemented a new Class B Charging Clean Air Zone that covers an area of about 3 km2 including Portsea, Somers Town and much of south-western Portsmouth. Unless you drive an exempt vehicle - namely Euro 6 if diesel or Euro 4 if petrol - you face a daily charge of £50 per day for HGVs irrespective of how many trips into the zone you make. LGVs, cars, motorbikes and mopeds are excluded. Portsmouth is offering financial support to businesses to upgrade or replace old, non-compliant vehicles with cleaner, greener ones. Bids are assessed for eligibility using a points-based scoring system. The BMF has learned the offer is worth up to £16,000 to retrofit your HGV or to buy or lease a compliant one. You can apply for a maximum of 3

HGVs. More information on the boundaries, exemptions and financial assistance is here: https://cleanerairportsmouth.co.uk/heavy-goods- vehicles-hgvs/

Portsmouth is the third CAZ after Bath & North East Somerset https:// beta.bathnes.gov.uk/bath-clean-air-zone and Birmingham https:// www.brumbreathes.co.uk/. Greater Manchester is next with a Class C CAZ from next year’s Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday www.cleanairgm. com

learner management and delivery as well as mentoring and coaching Apprentices. Prior to this, she spent 15 years at Boots Opticians as Learning Hub Manager.

Daniel, who has an Honours Degree in Politics and International Relations and a Master’s Degree in International Security Studies, previously worked as a Policy Advisor at the Almshouse Association. John Newcomb, CEO of the BMF said: “These appointments will strengthen our resources in support of two key themes identified as part of our latest strategic review - developing the role we play in attracting and retaining talent in the industry and helping to build awareness and influence with government.”

New homes must have EV charging points

The Prime Minister has announced that all new homes and certain buildings (like supermarkets and workplaces) in England will be required to install electric vehicle charge- points next year and ought to mean an extra 145,000 charge- points every year. Following a 2019 consultation exercise, ministers have decided to revise the Building Regulations so that within the site boundary: • every new home (including change of use) with car parking must have an EV charge-point. • residential buildings undergoing major renovation, with more than 10 parking spaces after renovation, must have at least one charge-point for each home with a parking space - and cable routes must be fitted in all spaces without charge-points.

• all new non-residential buildings, with more than 10 parking spaces, must have a minimum of one charge-point - and cable routes must be fitted in 1 in 5 of the total number of spaces.

• all non-residential buildings undergoing major renovation, with more than 10 parking spaces after renovation, must have a minimum of one charge- point - and cable routes must be fitted in 1 in 5 spaces.

• Many sites already make some provision for EV charge-points. The difference now is the scale and urgency. For merchants, this is an emerging market and BMF members are urged to consider how best they can stock and sell the equipment that house- builder customers will need in 6-9 months’ time.
