NEWS EXTRA APPRENTICESHIPS AT TP: CASE STUDIES
Christie Rose, Branch Assistant, Travis Perkins (top): Rose first joined the company on the Kickstarter scheme, after Travis Perkins plc became one of the Government’s official Kickstart employers to provide work place- ments for young people at risk of unemployment during the pandemic.
“I had just left school and had never heard of the Kickstart scheme before until one of my family members mentioned it to me. After looking more into it the placement at Travis Perkins caught my eye. Since I didn’t know what I wanted to do, the job was a way to help me gain work experience by using a range of different skills. “The thought of starting my
new, first proper job was daunt- ing, but Paul, my coach, was always there when I needed help, and all the branch staff were very welcoming, so slowly I gained confidence, developed both exist- ing ones and new skills.”
Gary Kent, National Stock and Systems Manager, Travis Perkins (middle): Kent is one of the first apprentices in the country to have completed a Level 6 Apprenticeship in Lead- ership with the Open University. This apprenticeship, for which he achieved a Merit, took 4 years and is the equivalent of a Bach- elor's Degree. It also has Char- tered Manager status with the Chartered Management Institute. “My Manager asked if I would be interested in this appren- ticeship. I knew it would be a challenge, but I decided that the sacrifice was worth the future benefit I would gain from the ap- prenticeship,” he says. “I really enjoyed learning about other departments and functions, and I gained more confidence to ask questions as to “why” we complete a task in a certain way, because I just had a better un- derstanding of how the business worked.”
Jessica Potter, Assistant Branch Manager, Keyline (bottom): Potter is an assistant branch manager at Keyline. She has really enjoyed the opportunity to move across different businesses within the Travis Perkins Group, even though this has meant a change of manager each time. Having an Apprenticeship Coach therefore became really important, and gave her one consistent point of contact, and a helpful familiar face she could talk to, who could also help her to navigate all these different experiences. Potter has also been impressed with the investment by senior leaders in the programme and the interest they take in her career de- velopment: “Even the MD knows about me and the programme I’m on!” she says. Her proudest moment was her
promotion to Assistant Branch Manager, especially as this hap- pened before she had completed her apprenticeship programme.
