BMJ was once accused of treachery because it accepted an advertisement from B&Q who were seeking staff when owner Kingfisher decided to set up a ‘trade arm’ B&Q Warehouse. Later, there was an almighty hoo-har when the BMF had no choice but to admit Retail Members, when B&Q threatened to cry ‘Cartel’ and complain to the Competition Commission.

The DIY market may be sitting slightly more easily alongside the merchants now – in the case of Wickes and TP round the same board- room table – but the disruptors are still with us, in the guise of businesses like Screwfix, Toolstation and the Construction Materials Online stable.
