Monday February 4 2019 THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM, BIRMINGHAM

monthly themed demonstrations which were held on the shop floor from 6pm to 9pm (but it was more like 11pm by the time all our guests left!). We worked around an Aga, together with an

induction hob and very little else… just plenty of knowledge and lots of humour. The demos were very popular: we released courses six months at a time which were filled quickly by what became a regular group of people. I had actually bought the shop building in 2011 (a no-brainer as the loan was less than my rent) and then saved to renovate it. When I had enough money, I decided to put in a cookery school upstairs whilst renovating. I can’t pretend the whole experience was easy - especially as we are in a Victorian listed building - but we got there. So we converted the two floors above the cookshop into a cookery school. The idea was to create a relaxed ‘home from home’ environment. Our light and airy kitchens are furnished with the very best equipment and feature large, sociable work stations where experiences can be shared.

We have invested in the very best: we installed two large islands for our work stations, six Fisher & Paykel ovens, 13 portable induction hobs, a clean down area, industrial dishwasher and one large fridge freezer. Cookmate Cookery School launched in April.

Our website at cookmate-worcester.co.uk allows us to showcase the classes, take online bookings and enquiries, and gives a true feeling of the ambience of both the school and shop. The number of courses varies month by month – and we will endeavour to educate on product, healthy eating and wellbeing. We plan to start with a select offering and build as our reputation and contacts grow. The courses run in the evenings and during

the day and are a mix of demonstration and hands on classes, to offer different price points. We have a family of multi-talented chefs working with us and choose the best chef for the class. At the time of going to press, upcoming classes include artisan bread, dinner parties made easy, speedy healthy summer supper, delicious alfresco dining, knife skills with Asian

influence, Cookmate’s signature demonstration evening, and a knife skills demonstration for dinner party success. In addition, we will look to offer bespoke

parties. We are targeting the corporate market too and will offer team building events, along with sharing knowledge on healthy eating, the importance of fitness and managing stress levels (I might go!). We are also welcoming suppliers to use the

venue for product launches, training and to offer sponsored classes. We expect guests to leave with new skills,

great memories, new friends and recipes to support their cooking at home.
