WHITE PAPER WARNS UK ‘IMPORTING ENERGY IT DOESN’T NEED’ DUE TO INDUSTRIAL HEAT LOSS
T
he UK is missing a major opportunity to cut emissions and reduce reliance on energy imports by failing to tackle industrial heat loss, according
to a new White Paper published by the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA). Across manufacturing plants and processing facilities,
signifi cant amounts of heat are lost every day from uninsulated or poorly insulated pipes, ducting, valves and equipment – wasted energy that drives up costs and emissions, while increasing reliance on imported supply. Chris Ridge, TICA’s technical director, said: “The heat

lost from one single uninsulated valve can equal the energy needed to power an electric car for 12,000 miles. Multiply that across many thousands of industrial and commercial sites, and it’s impossible to ignore the scale of the problem in the UK.” Meanwhile, analysis from the European Industrial Insulation Foundation (EiiF) has identifi ed potential emission reductions of 3,480 kilotonnes of CO2 and energy savings of 1,183 kilotonnes of oil equivalent across Europe – comparable to an annual energy use of more than 863,000 households or 1.7 million cars. The White Paper positions thermal insulation as a “no-regrets” solution, with
many projects paying for themselves within months and most within two years. In addition, TICA is urging the introduction of minimum thermal insulation
performance standards, including BS EN 17956 Energy Effi ciency Class C for new industrial installations and, where feasible, for existing assets, to create a consistent baseline for energy effi ciency across industry.

Mr Ridge added: “We are locking in ineffi ciency by failing to act. “This is one of the simplest, fastest and most cost-eff ective ways to cut energy use and emissions.” To view the White Paper or to receive a campaign pack visit: https://tica-acad.

HEAT PUMP SECTOR CALLS FOR POLICY CERTAINTY TO ACCELERATE ADOPTION IN NON-DOMESTIC BUILDINGS
T
he Heat Pump Association UK has set out key policy recommendations to accelerate the deployment of heat pumps in commercial, public sector and industrial settings in the UK. The latest publication outlines a series of actions that the heat pump sector and wider stakeholders involved in the supply chain, can take, together with key asks for the Government. HPA UK key policy recommendations for Government include calls to:
¡ Publish a national “Plan for the Electrifi cation of Non-Domestic Heat”, supported by a dedicated taskforce to deliver this ¡ Work to reduce the high cost of electricity relative to fossil fuels for all non- domestic energy users to improve UK competitiveness ¡ Provide clarity on future funding mechanisms for public sector decarbonisation, following the announced closure of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme in June 2025 ¡ Identify fast track grid connection zones for industrial electrifi cation ¡ Develop business models to unlock private investment in heat pump technologies
Commenting on the publication, HPA UK commercial and industrial
consultant, Bean Beanland, said: “The confi rmation that the Future Homes and Buildings Standard will mandate low carbon heating in non-domestic buildings from 2028 is welcome. What is needed now is clear direction, aligned incentives, and sustained practical support that gives businesses the confi dence to invest, innovate, and scale.” Laura Bishop, co-chair of HPA UK, also commented: “Our members are
already collaborating on eff ective solutions to scale heat pump adoption in non-domestic buildings. We look forward to continuing our work with Government, building on the strong progress already made, and putting in place the frameworks needed to accelerate delivery and support the UK’s transition to electrifi ed heating.” HPA UK acknowledges that the Government alone cannot drive the market. It stands ready to support the sector by collating and amplifying information, showcasing best practice, developing guidance, strengthening data collection and market insight, and exploring how to further develop the workforce.
