Making the case for hybrid heating

T

here are many in the industry who are making arguments in favour of hybrid heating systems which combine traditional fossil-fuel boilers with electric heat pumps. The idea is that the heat pump handles most heating demand efficiently, while the boiler covers peak loads or very cold weather. There is some revealing data around, which indicates that a good

proportion of boiler installations are hybrid systems. Often boiler replacements are distress purchases where a quick fix is needed, and a hybrid installation can be quick and straightforward. However, there are some challenges as our feature on Hybrids and

Alternative Heating Solutions reveals this month. Martyn Bridges, of Worcester Bosch, makes the argument in favour of hybrids, but bemoans the lack of funding within the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). You can see his viewpoint on pg 21. Neil Stead, of Intatec, believes that the industry needs to have a

practical conversation about the role hybrid systems can play. On pg20 he argues that retrofit can be the hardest challenge for standalone heat pump adoption, making hybrids a pragmatic route into decarbonisation. Other features this month include AHUs, Energy Efficiency and UFH.
