Case study: Grantham Health Centre A recent project at Grantham Health Centre in Lincolnshire demonstrates hybrid plant room design in practice. The building combines two Stratton mk3 60 kW wall-hung condensing boilers with a 50 kW Tyneham 290HT air source heat pump, supported by a 500 L buffer vessel and managed via a Building Management System (BMS). The system ensures year-round efficiency, using the heat pump during milder weather and the boilers in colder conditions. The BMS optimises operation based on outdoor temperature and heating demand, reducing energy consumption and winter operating costs. The hybrid configuration also delivers flow temperatures high enough to retain the existing radiators and pipework, thereby avoiding invasive building modifications, while making the most of the limited plant room space.

This balanced approach reflects NHSPS’s wider commitment to delivering

efficient, low-carbon upgrades that enhance performance while minimising disruption to existing healthcare facilities. Paul Jones, Regional Capital Project Lead - Midlands at NHSPS, said: “The

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

recent heating upgrade at Grantham Health Centre exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and future-proofing our facilities. This project is a testament to our dedication to creating sustainable healthcare environments equipped to meet the evolving needs of our communities.”

Flexible, future-ready plant rooms

Modern plant rooms must respond to a complex combination of pressures, including limited space, efficiency requirements, decarbonisation targets and evolving building use. Some projects will benefit from the compact flexibility of modular boilers, while others will leverage the efficiency and low-carbon advantages of hybrid systems. Ultimately, the key to successful plant room design is adaptability. By optimising space, maximising operational efficiency and integrating low-carbon technologies, modern plant rooms can deliver reliable performance today while remaining flexible enough to meet the demands of tomorrow
