Underfl oor heating done right – a practical guide for installers

W


ith energy effi ciency at the forefront of homeowners’ minds and industry regulations driving change, underfl oor


heating (UFH) is becoming an increasingly popular choice. The upcoming Future Homes Standard, set to take eff ect this year, will require new homes to produce 80% fewer carbon emissions, accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating solutions. UFH is emerging as a key player, off ering superior energy effi ciency by operating at lower temperatures while still delivering consistent, comfortable warmth. For installers, the rise in UFH demand presents both opportunities and challenges. While it off ers clear benefi ts, incorrect installation can lead to ineffi ciency, uneven heating, and costly callbacks. Expertise is essential – not only for ensuring a trouble-free installation but also for guiding homeowners in choosing the right system for their property.


Choosing the right UFH system


Selecting the correct UFH system is a crucial fi rst step in any installation. There are two primary types: hydronic underfl oor systems, like Wavin’s Comfi a, which use a network of pipes to distribute warm water beneath the fl oor, and electric systems, which rely on heating cables. Hydronic (water-based systems) are the


recommended solution in most cases, being highly effi cient, operating at lower temperatures than traditional radiators while providing even, long-lasting warmth. Running at around 30–50°C compared to radiators at 60–70°C, they reduce energy consumption and help lower heating bills over time. While installation is more complex and suited to new builds or extensions, their compatibility with renewable heating systems, such as heat pumps and solar thermal panels, makes them a compelling choice for homeowners looking to future-proof their heating with sustainable, energy-effi cient solutions. Electric UFH has traditionally been used where


there are structural constraints, such as in upstairs spaces where fl oor height or access is restricted. However, new solutions like Wavin’s WarmDeck now off er a water-based alternative that delivers the same low build height, with greater energy effi ciency and long-term performance.


This is a low-profi le, overlay panel system that supports hydronic UFH with minimal impact on fl oor height and can be laid over existing chipboard fl oors, making it a practical choice for both new builds and renovations where space or drying time is limited. These innovations have made it possible to install energy-effi cient, low-profi le hydronic systems in upper fl oors - eliminating the need to rely on electric matting in areas previously considered challenging for water-based UFH.


Practice makes perfect


Once you’ve chosen a UFH system, the key to successful installation lies in careful planning and attention to detail. In new builds, where hydronic UFH is the preferred choice due to its effi ciency and seamless integration into construction, installation is straightforward. Full access to the subfl oor during the build allows for a bespoke UFH system tailored to the property layout. As these systems connect to a boiler or heat pump via a manifold, incorporating them early on in the construction phase makes for a smooth and effi cient setup. For retrofi t projects, space constraints and existing


fl oor structures present unique challenges. Unlike new builds, where fl oors can be designed around UFH, renovations often require adapting to pre- existing layouts, which may complicate installation; this is where low profi le fl oating fl oor systems can be used in situations where preserving fl oor heights is critical. New solutions allow for seamless integration without compromising performance. It’s important here to choose the right product if you want the best results, balancing energy effi ciency with practicality. Ultimately, it’s critical for installers to have


suffi cient knowledge of all of the technologies available to ensure that they can make sure the job is done right fi rst time. This is why manufacturers have created dedicated installer networks to support professionals with bespoke training.
