It’s time for heat networks
G
overnment support for heat networks has seen them grow in prevalence in recent years.
If the trend continues it could result in heat networks meeting a significant percentage of the UK’s heat demand by the year 2050.
Consisting of a collection of insulated
pipes, a heat network distributes heat from a central source to multiple buildings within a community or district. Heat networks can provide heating and
hot water to domestic, commercial and public buildings, and are considered to be more energy-efficient and cost-effective than individual heating systems. With energy prices continuing to present a mammoth challenge countrywide, it’s clear that heat networks will be key to the UK’s Net Zero Strategy. Ultimately the aim is to make existing buildings, towns and cities more efficient and environmentally friendly and that makes them more attractive places to live. This month HVR is running a feature on heat networks, from page 10. You can learn about all the benefits and the transition to heat pump technology in heat networks. Also find out how it all works in practice at a stand out low carbon community heating project in Leyton (Pg11).
