INDUSTRY NEWS Inbrief

There are reports of a dramatic improvement in the payment habits of main contractors. About half of large

construction firms now claim to be paying their sub-contractors within 30 days or fewer, according to data gathered by BuildUK.

RECORD NUMBERS OF GSHPS MANUFACTURED IN UK

K

ensa Heat Pumps, the low carbon ground source heat pumps (GSHP) specialist, has broken production records recently, doubling its output

over the past 18 months and working towards a further twofold increase in capacity by 2023. Heat pumps are recognised as vitally important in helping the UK achieve its net carbon zero target, with the government aiming for 600,000 of them to be installed a year by 2028 – a significant increase in current market volumes. Every GSHP installed is the equivalent of taking

a combustion engine car off the road. To date over 1 million tonnes of carbon will be saved as a result of Kensa’s GSHP installations across social housing, new build developments, private retrofit homes, and businesses in the UK. Kensa Group chief executive, Simon Lomax, said:

“Kensa has passionately advocated for a long time that GSHPs are best placed to deliver low carbon heat to the UK. There is a particularly welcome focus from Government in ensuring a large proportion are manufactured here to boost our green economy. “In response, we are committed to scaling up production to meet increased demand and fulfil the Government’s ambition to ‘build back greener’. Our mission is to connect thousands more people in homes and businesses across the country to cleaner, greener, affordable heat.”

He continued: “Our teams have been working hard to

deliver fantastic outcomes over the last few months. In the midst of the challenges of a stretched global supply chain, a labour shortage, and significantly increased volumes, Kensa celebrated the highest monthly turnover ever and continues to break records in UK heat pump production.” To facilitate the widespread roll-out of the technology,

Kensa is urging Government to focus efforts on street- by-street installations of networked heat pumps, rather than replacing gas boilers on a house-by-house basis. This would enable whole communities to simply switch to their gas boilers to highly efficient GSHPs when they are ready to transition, supported by a subsidy from the government. If entities such as utility companies and local authorities took ownership of this underground infrastructure, then consumers would simply pay a standing charge as they do in their gas bills for the supply to their boiler.

NAADUK LAUNCHES NEW GUIDANCE DOCUMENT T

he National Association of Air Duct Specialists (NAADUK), has launched its new comprehensive guidance

document NAAD21, setting the standard for the ventilation hygiene sector. Jonathan Brennan, chairman of NAADUK said: “It is NAADUK’s hope that this will not only help ductwork technicians but also insurers, procurement departments, specifiers, and trainers in delivering safety, compliance and assuring competence within our industry. Following the tragedy at Grenfell it is important to this association that this advice is made freely available to all.” NAAD21 is a collaboration between experts in our industry and other associations, putting together a completely easy to read reference document for both Grease and Air (Indoor Air Quality). It is embedded throughout the GT0F 04 SCQF Level 5

(NVQ2): Ventilation Hygiene Certificate and forms the core of the qualification, covering the practises and procedures of the BSEHV11, the National Occupational Standard for cleaning industrial and commercial ventilation systems.

This is a qualification that until now has not been available within the industry. Peter Reid, president of NAADUK, said

he was extremely proud of members for putting together a world-leading guidance document in air conditioning, which is already recognised in other countries around the world and is in directly compliance with the Dame Hackett review for technical information to be freely available. This 134-page document is to be

given freely, at no charge to all interested parties. “Our aim at NAADUK is to raise the bar of competency

and awareness in ventilation hygiene for the many and not for a select few. NAAD21 enables technicians to demonstrate their professional competency and offers building owners a guidance document to use as reference. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic NAADUK has issued several papers on COVID-19 Guidance for Ventilation Hygiene Risk Assessment & Welfare, all of which were well received worldwide.” For your free copy of NAAD21, please send an email with your details to admin@naaduk.co.uk.
