DOMESTIC HEATING

Efficient portable air coolers for professionals

it comes to incorrect sizing. In the past, gas boilers were routinely oversized because they came in fi xed output increments. Their high fl ow temperatures meant there was always a margin for error. Heat pumps, however, operate at lower temperatures and rely heavily on

system effi ciency. The size of both the heat pump, the hot water cylinder and the space heating emitters must be carefully calculated based on the fabric of the property and its specifi c hot water and heating requirements. Over-sizing or under-sizing can lead to poor performance, higher running costs, and negative user experiences, which could undermine confi dence in heat pump technology. The HWA has produced a paper: ‘HWA 002:2020 Hot water storage vessels

for Domestic Purposes for use with Heat Pumps. Specifi cation of particular requirements, test methods and labelling for hot water storage vessels designed primarily for indirect water heating using heat pumps.’ This standard was developed in response to these challenges. It ensures that hot water cylinders labelled as “heat pump ready” are designed with the correct heat exchangers, controls, and safety systems to work eff ectively with modern heat pumps. The standard also encourages specifi ers and installers to consider the full system, including heat emitters, controls and pipework, rather than mix-and-matching incompatible components. Historically, UK installers have purchased boilers, cylinders and controls from

diff erent manufacturers and often from various merchants. In Europe, for some time it has been more common for installers to purchase a whole heat pump system – heat pump, cylinder and controls. Once they have carried out all the calculations and designed the system, they can then ensure that the system they select will be fi t for purpose and work as effi ciently as it should. We believe that this way of purchasing heat pump systems will become more the norm here in the UK.

And fi nally…

As the UK accelerates its transition to low-carbon heating, both standalone and integrated heat pump cylinders will play a key role. For new builds, they off er an opportunity to optimise energy effi ciency from the ground up. In existing properties, careful planning and proper product selection, guided by standards such as HWA 002, are essential to ensuring performance, safety, and long-term user satisfaction.
