CIBSE approved CPD from Ideal Heating Commercial explains heat pump refrigerant types

I

deal Heating Commercial has released a new CIBSE approved CPD: Understanding refrigerants & how they affect the choice of commercial heat pumps. It addresses both synthetic and natural refrigerants, and provides valuable advice for customers seeking the most energy efficient commercial heat pump. A concise CPD, ideal for a lunchtime session, it opens with a brief introduction to heat pumps and how they operate, including the refrigerant cycle and key principles such as co-efficient of performance (COP) and global warming potential (GWP). It then proceeds to explain the different refrigerant types (synthetic and natural) and their key features, and the factors to take into account when designing an efficient heating system using the different refrigerants. The CPD also addresses decarbonisation in the heating sector and refrigerant phase-down, and closes by touching on the future of refrigerants.

The new ‘Understanding refrigerants & how they affect the choice of commercial heat pumps’ CPD was officially launched at the BESA Annual Conference on 17th October, where it was presented by Ideal Heating Commercial Head of Specification Richard Brown.

The new CPD has been introduced to raise awareness of refrigerant types, following the recent expansion of Ideal Heating Commercial’s ECOMOD range of commercial heat pumps to include natural refrigerant models for the first time.

For the most compact boiler cascade on the market, choose Stratton from Hamworthy

H

amworthy Heating include in their comprehensive product range the Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boiler. When

installed on a Hamworthy low height frame and header kit, outputs from 40- 70kW offer the most compact cascade configuration available on the market. Considerably smaller than other well-known manufacturers’ models, Stratton mk3 boilers feature a compact footprint, with models up to 70kW measuring only 487w x 577d x 764h. Moreover, when fitted to a Hamworthy Heating low-height frame and header kit, Stratton mk3 boilers benefit from a height of only 1474mm from the floor to the top of the boiler flue connection. These dimensions make a Stratton mk3 cascade the perfect solution for plantrooms where available height and footprint space is limited. Offering a compact solution with outstanding efficiency, installing a Stratton cascade also provides several benefits over using one large boiler. By allowing multiple boilers to work together for an efficient and flexible solution, a Stratton mk3 cascade also offers added protection against breakdown and system failure.

Suitable for new and retrofit installations, Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boilers offer a 5:1 turndown ratio, excellent low-class 6 NOx emission across all models, and up to 97% gross seasonal efficiency. Featuring a durable stainless steel heat exchanger for longevity, the boilers offer exceptional system tolerance and are backed by a five-year heat exchanger warranty.

Swegon presents a concept air handling unit in wood

A

s the environmental impact of the building industry increases in focus, the call for sustainable innovations has never been more pressing. Swegon is therefore proud to present its first wooden air handling unit that could redefine the industry’s approach to reducing carbon emissions. So far, two functioning prototypes of wooden GOLD air handling unit, size 005 have been built, where the traditional casing of conventional steel has been replaced by cross-laminated timber (CLT). By replacing the steel, Swegon managed to reduce the CO2 footprint by 40 percent. For a larger air handling unit, the saving would be even greater.

“By rethinking material choices and challenging industry norms, we are driving the future of sustainable building solutions and this concept is an important step in testing the limits for the industry,” says Martin Ottersten, PhD, Innovation and Knowledge Centre at Swegon. “We have already introduced recycled steel inside our GOLD units to minimise environmental impact. With this concept wooden air handling unit we take a significant step further, in line with our ambitions within the RE:3 concept to be in the forefront of reducing embodied carbon of products’, says Annika Sedwall, head of product management, Kvänum. The unit is a concept product that is not on the market for sale, but will be evaluated and used in discussions around future alternative materials. www.swegon.com/uk/
