TELFORD INDUSTRIAL ESTATE GAINS 200 TREES THANKS TO VIESSMANN EMPLOYEE

A

Viessmann employee has led an initiative that saw 200 trees planted at the company’s

Hortonwood Industrial Estate headquarters. Vikki Robbins from Lawley Village,

Telford, a contract support and promotions supervisor at Viessmann, was inspired by the work of national Shropshire-based charity Small Woods Association and a desire to remember a former colleague who died in 2020. The initial plan was to plant just one

tree, with Vikki offering to bring her spade if Viessmann could provide the land and buy the tree. The result was a Sunday spent planting 200 trees supplied and supervised by social enterprise, Telford Woods, and the Friends of Ketley Paddock Mound, together with Viessmann colleagues and their friends and families. NEW CIBSE GUIDANCE: ELECTRIFICATION FOR NET ZERO

N I

ew guidance on the design and operation of building electrical services that focus on the electrifi cation of buildings in the drive to Net Zero

carbon has been published by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). The UK’s drive to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 is seeing a shift in buildings to electric heating and increasing demand for electric vehicle charging points. Greater electrifi cation of building services will have signifi cant implications for the design and operation of buildings and their building services because electricity is much more expensive than fossil fuels at the point of use. Without well- considered design, this could result in big increases in energy bills and issues with grid capacity.

Vikki Robbins, who led the planting of 200 trees at Viessmann, with Andrew Lambert (left) and Graham Russell (right) from Viessmann

an engineer at Viessmann, has also been installed next to the trees. David’s wife, Janet Hughes, has said she and her girls are honoured and grateful that he is being remembered in this way. Vikki explained her motivation:

“Thousands of new homes are being developed in my village and as a keen dog

walker, I see first-hand the vast destruction of trees and reduction in wildlife habitat going on to make way for them. I wanted to play a small role in replacing some of them and encouraging others to plant more trees.” Graham Russell, managing director of Viessmann in the UK, said: “Viessmann is a family-owned business with a strong heritage in looking after the environment. With our low carbon and renewable heating products, we are on the frontline of reducing emissions from the heating of buildings and it’s great to be able to make a contribution to the planet on a very local level.”

CIBSE Technical Memorandum 67 Electrifi cation of buildings for net zero has been written to provide guidance for all engineers involved in the design and operation of building electrical services that focus on the drive to Net Zero carbon. The document outlines best practice and the emergence of new technologies, systems and protocols to facilitate eff ective and safe design and operation of buildings. The guidance includes advice on overarching strategies

and performance metrics; connection to and interaction with the network; new opportunities and challenges in operation; and electrical storage and generation systems. It also includes design guidance including strategies for reducing demand; plant sizing for low energy buildings; and demand fl exibility in order to respond to respond to the needs of the electricity grid. Julie Godefroy, head of sustainability at CIBSE said: “The

electrifi cation of buildings is a key step on the road to a zero- carbon future. CIBSE TM67 provides timely guidance for all engineers involved in the design and operation of building electrical services.”

WHITTY URGES BUSINESSES TO INVEST IN VENTILATION

nvesting in building ventilation will play a key role in helping the country recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for future health emergencies, according to

government’s chief medical adviser Professor Chris Whitty. He encouraged business leaders at the CBI conference to look closely at how they could improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) in their buildings to provide better long-term working conditions for their employees. “We have realised the extraordinary importance of

improving the ventilation of workplaces, not just for Covid but also for many other respiratory infections,” he said. “If we invest in that now, we’ll both help the aftermath of Covid, but also cut down on things like fl u outbreaks.” He put investment in ventilation as the second most important step businesses could take behind helping their staff get fully vaccinated – and highlighted the direct link between poor IAQ and health conditions that put extra pressure on the NHS.
