Coventry’s redeveloped Warwick Arts Centre has been fitted with low noise level air distribution products supplied by Waterloo.
When specifying air terminal devices for performance spaces, optimum air quality is not the only consideration. For moments when the audience should be able to hear a pin drop, low noise generation is crucial. M&E services subcontractor Dodd Group, working together with consultants Hoare Lea and the Waterloo team, selected Thermally Actuated Swirl Diffusers (SDACH) for the three auditoria to ensure the lowest noise levels. By using a temperature controlled actuator, this diffuser achieves very good control levels in both heating and cooling. In the exhibition galleries, to ensure the regularly changing exhibits would not be disturbed by air flow, Waterloo’s adjustable Hi-Flo Jet Diffusers (RWH) were chosen. For the building exterior Large Format Fixed Blade External Louvres (WG-EF) were selected due to their 75mm pitch which ensures low noise and pressure drop characteristics whilst protecting against water ingress.

Panasonic Air-to-Water Aquarea Heat Pumps are providing energy efficient heating and hot water to the Wicklow Hospice in Ireland.
Consultants, J V Tierney & Co and main mechanical contractors Quinn Downes created a design for a low carbon heating system to service the facilities of this new hospice. The solution, featuring a Panasonic Aquarea H Series T-Cap system, delivers low environmental impact, requires minimal maintenance, and is highly energy efficient and yet cost-effective. Base Engineering specified and installed six Aquarea H Series T-Cap 16kW units along with a Panasonic Cascade Controller to provide underfloor heating to 2022m2 of floor space to the new building. The Panasonic heat pump system is able to use the free energy created by 24 solar panels on the roof.
The underfloor heating is made up of 13,000m of pipework, controlled by 68 thermostats. Each of the six Panasonic Aquarea heat pumps links to a 1500l buffer tank which then provides hot water to the underfloor heating system across the entire facility.

Radisson RED London Heathrow and Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre London Heathrow have been equipped with the latest high-performance CIAT and Toshiba HVAC technology as part of a major refurbishment. Several main areas areas of the four-star hotel are served by a high-performance CIAT Floway 5000 AHU, ensuring comfort for guests and low-running costs for the hotel. The Floway AHU is equipped with a counter-flow plate exchanger that manages airtight air flows between fresh and extracted air. This recovers up to 80% of the energy that would otherwise be lost via exhaust air, transferring it to incoming fresh air to temper it, boosting efficiency and further enhancing occupant comfort. The AHU is paired with a high-efficiency Toshiba DX outdoor condensing unit and heat recovery ventilation system, while two Toshiba SMMS-e VRF systems deliver cooling and heating via 11 ducted indoor units with concealed diffusers for a top-quality finish. Two Toshiba Carrier UK DX-powered door curtains provide a thermal barrier to minimise energy loss.

GILBERTS
Gilberts Blackpool has delivered energy efficient ventilation to the £48 million Merseyside Police headquarters.
Necessitated by the highly urban location, mechanical ventilation/air conditioning has been installed throughout, with diffusers from Gilberts strategically delivering high levels of ventilation and IAQ in the complex. The main atrium has Gilberts’ JN jet nozzles which deliver a high volume of air over long distances. The offices in the main building and annex are aired by GSLS linear slot diffusers. Meeting spaces feature PG perforated face diffusers inset into suspended feature “ceiling” grids above seating. Thus, the ventilation blends into the décor whilst providing a uniform air distribution. SX air valves ventilate the toilets. The forensics laboratories are aired by Gilberts’ PGL perforated laminar flow panels. Peter Wright, of A & B Engineering, explained: “Merseyside Police appreciates that a light, well- ventilated office environment is beneficial: achieving that was a fundamental design principle.
