LONDON MAYOR LAUNCHES AIR QUALITY AUDITS FOR NURSERIES

M

easures by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to understand the impact of poor air quality on children are being extended to include audits at

20 nursery schools across 12 boroughs in London. The air quality audits will be carried out by engineering

consultancy WSP, assessing indoor and outdoor pollution sources and identifying ways to cut nitrous oxides and PM2.5 and PM10 particulates. The move follows fi ndings by University College London and the University of Cambridge that a signifi cant proportion of indoor air pollution in schools is due to outdoor air pollution. “Most schools and nurseries in urban areas cannot open

windows because of pollution, noise and security issues, so they are dependent on mechanical ventilation,” noted Stephan Lang of SAV Systems. “It is therefore essential that such systems are fi tted with high levels of fi ltration, as specifi ed by the latest version of Building Bulletin 101 (BB101), ‘Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools’.”

SAV’s AirMaster Smart Ventilation Units are fi tted with ISO 16890 compliant fi lters, ensuring fi ltration of specifi c particle sizes, PM1, PM2.5 and PM10. AirMaster units fi lter both incoming air and outgoing air to protect heat exchangers, as well as fi ltering out pollutants for occupants. The nursery audit is funded by the Mayor’s Air Quality

Fund, with each nursery involved receiving £4,500 towards implementing the recommendations of the audits.

COOLAIR DUO COMPLETE NIGHT BIKE RIDE FOR HEART CHARITY

T

wo intrepid colleagues from air conditioning contractor Coolair Equipment in Manchester recently completed a 56-mile night bike ride for

charity. Regional director Steve Valentine (pictured) and sales and design engineer Scott Lightfoot raised over £2,000

between them for the British Heart Foundation by cycling from Manchester to Blackpool throughout the early hours of the morning in freezing weather conditions. Mr Valentine took on the fundraising challenge in memory of his Dad, John, who died suddenly from a heart attack this year at the age of only 68. His fundraising appeal inspired Mr Lightfoot, who had himself undergone heart surgery, to join him. Having completed the gruelling 400-mile Agra to Jaipur

Cycle Challenge in 2014 for Save the Children, Mr Valentine found his latest ride equally demanding. The Coolair Equipment director who lives in Rossendale,

Lancashire, and Mr Lightfoot – from Stockport, Greater Manchester – set off from Old Traff ord Cricket Ground and, after almost fi ve hours of putting their endurance levels to the test, arrived together at the fi nish line on Blackpool Promenade. Mr Valentine commented: “The midnight start, hill climbs and freezing conditions, with the thermometer dropping to -1°C, made this just as tough as my cycle ride across India. “At the fi nish I was freezing cold and very tired, but thrilled at having completed my fi rst-ever cycle ride through the night. “When I started training for the Manchester to Blackpool challenge, I set myself a target of raising £600 and increasing awareness of heart disease amongst friends, families and customers. I was delighted that we raised so much money, which will be split between the British Heart Foundation and a local BHF store.”
