REHAU LAUNCHES MYTH-BUSTING DISTRICT HEATING GUIDE

W

ith heat networks still only contributing around 2% of the UK’s total heat

demand, Rehau has released a new guide to help M&E consultants and contractors better understand the use of pre-insulated pipes in district heating systems. ‘Breaking Down the Barriers’ is a 12-page guide aiming to improve the industry’s understanding of heat networks and correct some commonly held misconceptions surrounding district heating pipework.

The guide delves into the world of district heating, which uses a variety of sources, including gas and energy from waste and renewable energy sources, to provide heat demand for a number of buildings, whether residential, commercial or multi- occupancy.

It also explores the benefi ts of this heat network, which off ers carbon savings via local heat generation, lower bills to end users and can help reduce fuel poverty, lower maintenance and ensure fuel security. The guide addresses some common

misconceptions surrounding district heating and the use of polymer pipes in these heat networks. Common

issues, such as whether specialist welding teams are required for installation and whether polymer pipes are only suited for small networks and house connections, are also dealth with. M&E contractors are also off ered fi ve tips to consider when working on district heating projects. ‘Breaking Down the Barriers’ is

the second free-to-download guide to be published under Rehau’s Build Your Legacy campaign – an initiative devised to encourage M&E contractors to consider how the product choices they make today will impact on a building’s performance in years to come. It focuses on the four key ways to deliver more sustainable, future- proof installations by addressing quality, technical know-how, trust and reliability, and innovation and sustainability.

Steve Richmond, head of marketing and technical for Building Solutions at Rehau, said: “District heating systems off er so many benefi ts and according to estimates could contribute as much as 17% of heat to our homes and 24% of heat to commercial buildings by 2050, ultimately supporting the UK’s goal to reduce carbon emissions. But if we are to use this system as

it has been in Europe, we must bust open some common misconceptions around district heating and the use of polymer pipes and encourage its adoption. This guide takes on many of these concerns and reassures contractors that their projects will leave a positive legacy for the building users for many years to come.” Also available as part of the Build

Your Legacy campaign is ‘The Sound of Silence’ – the M&E contractor’s essential guide to acoustic soil and waste pipework. Pending guides will discuss 21st century plumbing and heating, and multi-occupancy buildings.

COOL DESIGNS AND PANASONIC END DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT

C

ool Designs has terminated its distribution agreement with Panasonic as part of its ongoing strategic growth plan. The agreement ended at the

close of 2018, following a record year of sales for Cool Designs focused mainly on Toshiba and CIAT equipment. Alongside the streamlined product line-up, the company has moved to a new head offi ce alongside the River Tyne in Gateshead, providing an additional 10,000 sq ft of warehouse space to improve stock levels, and a further 3,000 sq ft of offi ce space. The new location includes a trade counter and an

enlarged air conditioning training centre to fulfi l increasing demand for Cool Designs’ high quality technical training courses for installers and service companies. Founder and managing director Darrel Birkett said: “It has been an outstanding year and we have continued to increase sales, driven mainly by the new technology

roll-outs by Toshiba and the recent addition of CIAT to our range. We have seen a big swing towards R32 as Toshiba’s Digital Inverter range has come on-stream, while the VRF market remains strong due to Toshiba’s class-leading effi ciency, reliability and installer-friendly technology.” In addition to continuing steady growth in VRF and R32 equipment, one of the biggest areas of expansion is in applied equipment. This has taken off dramatically since the introduction of CIAT, and with a combined DX and airside off ering now covering all project requirements, the company views this as a considerable growth opportunity which has already helped it win some major projects. Sales growth has come from across the UK, with London and the south of England performing particularly strongly. Cool Designs is planning new hubs for training and stockholding to ensure service levels are maintained as the business expands.
