Heat pump market laid bare

A

tue and clear picture of the UK heat pump as it stands today is revealed in a new report released by the Heat Pump Association (HPA). The report is intended to provide a

comprehensive roadmap and policy direction to intensify adoption across the nation. As well as a detailed examination of the current state of the sector, the report also makes recommendations on what needs to be done to ensure the success of the heat pump roll out. Available as a free download, the

HPA addresses all the heat pump hot topics including upfront costs and how to reduce them, training and the existing workforce; confidence of both installers and consumers and how to support heat networks.

This is an in-depth report which offers a clear picture of the current situation, the opportunities available and crucially what needs to be done particularly with regard to the current price of electricity in comparison to gas. With the UK’s heat pump market still lagging so far behind the European market, heat pump professionals have unsurprsingly expressed their support for the report which sets out a clear pathway to Net Zero. BSRIA CALLS FOR CLEANER AIR, FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

T

his year’s BSRIA briefing – Cleaner Air, Better Tomorrow – took place on the 17th of November with speeches from a panel of expert

academics, journalists and meteorologists, all of whom are focused on developing a sustainable and holistic approach to tackling poor indoor air quality. The annual event encompassed a wide breadth

of related subjects, discussing the roles of weather and moisture in changing interior air-quality, as well as the role that decarbonisation plays and the importance of leadership when grappling with public health issues. However, each of the six speakers underscored the

significant challenge posed by the need to improve indoor air quality. They all noted that developing positive change will rely on a coordination between different industries and disciplines that does not yet exist on a large scale. Dr Matthew Hort, leader of the Atmospheric Dispersion and Air Quality Team at the Met Office summarised this by explaining that mechanical solutions alone do not guarantee better air quality if we cannot also adapt our behaviour as individuals and societies. The importance of the role that humans play, in what is often considered a mechanical or environmental issue, was prevalent throughout the speeches and Q&As. In particular, in the speeches

from Roger Harrabin, former Environment and Energy Correspondent for the BBC, and Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam MBE took this angle. Both drew on personal experiences – as a grandfather to a girl with breathing issues and Deputy Chief Medical Officer respectively – to compel the audience of attending professionals and business leaders to act as one in finding solutions. This need for a combined effort in finding a holistic solution was summarised by BSRIA’s CEO Julia Evans OBE, who closed out the afternoon by saying, “We have spoken today about the environment and science, the personal and the political. I think what that demonstrates is that, if we don’t work in partnership, we are unlikely to overcome any of the major issues faced by society.”
