On-demand colour printing
as 25 per cent.

A
s the busy packaging periods of Halloween and Christmas approach, producers are once again under pressure to deliver themed packaging at speed while keeping costs and waste to a minimum. Ordering large volumes of pre-printed labels in advance has been the traditional solution. While this guarantees supply, it also creates problems such as overproduction, unused stock and rising expenses. During busy periods, packaging waste alone can increase by as much
More manufacturers are now transitioning to on-demand label printing using digital inkjet systems. This method avoids the need to commit to big print runs months in advance. It also makes it possible to react immediately to real-time demand, update designs without delay, and apply pricing changes whenever necessary. The practical benefi ts of this approach are becoming clear. By reducing the need to store large quantities of pre-printed labels, companies can free up valuable warehouse space and reduce the likelihood of waste caused by unused stock. This effi ciency not only improves day-to-day operations but also reduces the fi nancial strain caused by unsold or outdated labels. The sustainability advantages are equally
signifi cant. Research suggests that businesses could cut ink waste by up to 619 tonnes each year and lower carbon dioxide emissions by 6.7 million tonnes by moving away from conventional labelling processes. Environmental responsibility is growing in importance, and these fi gures highlight the potential for measurable improvement.
Bringing labelling production in-house also gives brands greater creative control. Seasonal packaging, promotional editions and even personalised SKUs can be introduced quickly without waiting on third-party suppliers. At a time when social media and TikTok trends emerge and fade at a feverish pace, printing production needs to be far more agile to capitalise on these moments. It is vital for businesses to stay aligned with consumer trends while also avoiding the cost and risk of producing more labels than required.
Epson’s ColorWorks C8000 is an example of how scalable on-demand, desktop colour printers can be in meeting high label demands. It combines speed, quality and fl exibility to help manufacturers stay responsive without adding unnecessary cost or waste.
To support companies considering the switch to on-demand labelling, Epson has also developed a carbon dioxide calculator. This tool helps organisations evaluate the potential impact in terms of cost effi ciency, time savings and emission reductions, making the decision easier to quantify. In a sector defi ned by seasonal peaks and shifting consumer demands and trends, on-demand colour printing provides a fl exible and sustainable alternative. Manufacturers can respond faster, reduce waste and take tighter control of their packaging operations, all while maintaining quality and creative freedom.
