Drying, Curing & UV
Inadequate moisture measurements can have a direct impact on the properties of the web
I
nadequate moisture levels can lead to variations in mechanical properties and how the material responds to stress, resulting in issues such as unevenness, stretching, shrinking, bagginess and length discrepancies. The manufacturing processes involved are often intricate, necessitating specialised measurements and expertise in web gauging applications. The coating combination is typically the most valuable component of converted paper, fi lm and foil products, making it crucial to employ the right coat weight measurement technique.
KNOCKING OUT WASTED PRODUCT & DOWNTIME
Moisture content measurement plays a crucial role in meeting industry standards, particularly in the case of paper and paperboard converting processes. To ensure that the product falls within the acceptable moisture range (typically 4-8 per cent), it is essential to accurately measure moisture levels throughout the converting process. Adhering to these standards is vital to prevent costly issues such as product curl, warpage, excess weight, delamination, density variation and more.
During the drying and laminating phases of the production process, companies can experience curl or warp in the fi nished product. The warp is commonly caused by unequal moisture content in the raw materials or individual sheets, which can waste on average 10-15 per cent of the product.
The first step to controlling the moisture content is to measure it accurately and consistently in the raw materials or in webs of paper before it is laminated. MoistTech’s IR3000 is uniquely designed to read the
moisture levels in all converting, paper and corrugated applications with ease.
MAINTAIN OPTIMAL CONSISTENCY WITH EASE
In coating applications, maintaining appropriate moisture levels ensures that coatings adhere optimally to surfaces, which is essential for the longevity and eff ectiveness of the coating. Additionally, controlling moisture helps maintain the desired consistency and viscosity of coating materials, allowing for smooth and even application. Eff ective moisture measurement and management can prevent a range of quality issues in coated products, including blistering, peeling and poor fi nish quality. By implementing precise moisture control techniques, manufacturers can signifi cantly enhance the overall quality and durability of their coated products.
Moisture control also prevents delamination or poor bonding between layers from excess moisture, which can compromise the integrity of the laminated material. Maintaining appropriate moisture levels also ensures the strength and durability of laminated products, enhancing their longevity and performance. Lastly, accurate moisture measurement allows for the optimisation of the lamination process, leading to reduced waste and improved energy effi ciency.
A MULTITUDE OF BENEFITS
The IR3000 is essential for controlling various types of re-moisturisers and dryers in the paper production process. It enables precise moisture management in roll, steam, disk and spray re- moisturisers, as well as convection, radiant and infrared dryers. Real-time, continuous moisture
measurement allows operational personnel to make crucial, immediate adjustments to the production process, optimising energy usage and product quality.
The IR3000 sensors off er instant and continuous measurements, improving product quality, productivity and energy effi ciency from bark fuel to fi nished paper products. The IR3000 sensors provide crucial moisture measurements at various stages of paper and pulp production. For bark fuel effi ciency, the sensors monitor moisture content in bark used as fuel, ensuring optimal dryness for steam generation in pulp mills. In market pulp production, the sensors maintain the required 10 per cent moisture content for baled market pulp, preventing fi ber-to-fi ber bonding and facilitating dispersion during processing. For rolled pulp products, the sensors ensure a fi ve to six per cent moisture content, while for fi nished papers, they maintain moisture levels between two per cent and 12 per cent, which is crucial for preserving paper properties.
IMPLEMENTING MOISTTECH Adhering to standards is vital to prevent costly issues such as product curl, warpage, excess weight, delamination, density variation and more. • Non-Contact: Our equipment never comes in direct contact with the product
• Zero Drift: Our sensors are guaranteed to never drift over time
• Closed-Loop: Create a closed-loop process by connecting moisture rates to your PLC
• No Recalibrations: never recalibrate your sensor for the same product twice!
