Labelling Innovia’s films hit the mark

Innovia shares a view of some of the products, focussing on the growing range of applications where BOPP can be used.

I

nnovia Films (Innovia) is a major producer of highly differentiated speciality Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) using ‘Bubble’ and Stenter technologies and Cast Polypropylene (CPP) films. This means that Innovia offers a particularly wide portfolio of products to the packaging and labelling industries. The company currently provides specialist solutions for pressure sensitive, roll-fed wraparound, shrink sleeves, cut and stack and in-mould label applications. This includes coated, uncoated, clear, white, cavitated, matt and metallised films.

The company holds a leading global position in the markets for high performance coated films, tobacco overwrap, labels and security films. With over 30 years’ experience of manufacturing pressure sensitive facestock films, it employs over 1400 people worldwide. Production sites are based in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Mexico and the UK.

Innovia is striving to offer the labels market value through widening the applications that BOPP can be used for. Polymer modifications enable fundamental changes in film performance. Balancing new polymer properties with manufacturing capability can offer exceptional opportunities for BOPP in new markets.

One of the most recent developments for pressure sensitive labelling (PSL) applications in Europe is a white cavitated BOPP base film, Rayoface QB. The film is available at 57 microns and is corona treated on one side. With an opacity of 91%, QB is better than some solid white label films. In addition, QB has excellent compatibility with PSL adhesives and printing inks. QB will service a vast number of market segments such as household and personal care, food and beverage, and other consumer packaged goods sectors. This is only available from the Polish plant. Innovia has also added RayoForm EUP to its In Mould labelling range. EUP is a 60 micron, cavitated, white opaque, two-side matt, multi- layer film that provides IML containers with a ‘soft touch’ tactile surface. It is printable and ensures that there is no distortion when used with PP or PE containers.

In 2020 Innovia’s parent company CCL Industries announced the investment of $35 m in a new six-metre multi-layer co-extrusion line at Innovia’s Polish plant to produce RayoFloat APO polyolefin shrink sleeve films. This hybrid low density polyolefin film facilitates easy separation of labels from PET bottles and other types of plastic containers in the recycling process to enable bottle-to-bottle circularity, an important

goal for global food and beverage brand owners. The capacity comes online in early 2022. The range of Encore highly functional sustainable and fully recyclable BOPP films for labelling applications includes films that are: O carbon neutral O films with 30% bio-sourced renewable content PP resin

O films with 30% chemically recycled plastic waste sourced PP resin

O and films with over 98% bio-sourced renewable content.

Encore films are certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) programme and enable companies to reduce their use of fossil resources.

Another growing market segment for Innovia is linerless labels. As BOPP films are water and tear resistant, they are ideal for frozen and high moisture supply lines. Preserving premium brand labelling throughout the products shelf life. These 90 micron thick films have excellent stiffness, allowing high speed labelling even for very large/ long, wide edge leading labels. Clean label removal is vital for linerless applications. Rayoface linerless label films offer easy label removal with no tearing, which allows the label to be removed in one piece by the consumers and can be easily separated from the tray material for recycling. When used with PET trays and the label is not removed, the PP label will float and separate from the PET tray material. Ensuring the high yield of tray recyclate. Innovia Films will be exhibiting at INDEX Non- Woven exhibition in Geneva 19 to 22 October showcasing its Rayoface Reclose films for recloseable applications such as wet wipes. This clear films’ strength comes from its thickness – 92 microns making it ideal for both large and small packs as it maintains its stiffness throughout the life of the pack. This performance can be achieved with a mono film, eliminating the need to laminate several layers together, reduces costs and resources.

While the film is thick, it still has exceptional clarity which allows printed branding on a wet wipe pack to show through. The film also has a special print and adhesive receptive coating to ensure high quality print performance.
