Amid the ongoing struggle to recruit enough seasonal staff over the Christmas period, Antalis is reminding businesses that machinery which speeds up the packing process can reduce the need for additional labour during the festive peak in demand. It comes as latest figures reveal that almost half (43 per cent) of labour providers admitted that they would not be able to supply enough seasonal staff to the food, manufacturing and distribution sectors, to help cope with the busiest time of the year for many – Black Friday and Christmas. Martin Styler, sales director at Antalis Packaging, commented: “While the Christmas period is the most lucrative time of year for most businesses, one of the

most pressing issues facing the food, e-commerce, and manufacturing sectors is the lack of availability of staff, which is having a real and detrimental impact on their ability to meet seasonal demand. As such, businesses should look at ways to reduce the need for significant jumps in staff recruitment at peak times – and packaging machinery is increasingly proving the answer for many. Whether its case erectors that take flat packed boxes and build them up, or pallet wrappers which minimise the amount of stretch film used, there are now several ways to help speed up the packing process and ultimately address the Christmas staff shortage. This approach can also save on valuable materials, warehouse space and labour – all of which will serve to boost the bottom-line.” One such solution, for example, is the Neopost's CVP-500, an automated

RAP launches range made entirely from plant waste

UK sandwich packaging designer and manufacturer, RAP, has launched a new range produced entirely from agricultural waste. Precious Planet FoodService, 100% compostable and produced from leaves and stems left behind from harvest, is of significant importance, the company said, and further underlines its commitment to removing avoidable plastics from its food- to-go packaging range. Graham Williams, CEO, said, “While the launch of this new range

signals a pivotal moment for us, it’s also part of a long journey we embark upon. We take sustainability extremely seriously. We appointed Paola Carceles as our head of sustainability last year and the Precious Planet FoodService range isn’t just another packaging product. It’s a whole new brand, and one that will help pave the way for further developments to meet the needs of both the retailer and the ever-more demanding, environmentally-conscious consumer.” The board used can be recycled up to seven times, which offers a closed loop solution diverting waste from landfill, and more crucially our oceans. The Precious Planet FoodService range is produced from wood

fibres, and the cellulose film lining is certified to both the Forestry Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement for Forestry Certification standards.

Eco-friendly food packaging is UK’s first thermal paper solution
