New software offers print traceability I

nk logistics provider GSE has enhanced its ink manager software by introducing an optional module

that brings improved control of job procedures and costs, as well as better traceability in label and packaging printing. GSE Ink manager software enables

converters to minimise ink-related waste, providing improved ink yields, enhanced reporting and business planning and reduced setup times. The new accompanying management

software module, GSE Article management, features two control elements to enable the operator to achieve repeatable quality and accurate cost estimates when printing a design, or ‘article’. Its ink calculator function automatically determines exact amounts of colour needed for printing each article. As well as volume, it can also calculate the printed surface area covered by each colour, based on the length, width and coverage factor. GSE Article management also allows the

operator to define or describe specific procedures and equipment used for printing the article, such as required viscosity level, selected anilox roll, designated press and press operator. The software also records all changes, so a traceable history of design changes, by revision stage, can be provided on demand. When the article is re-ordered, this

information can be instantly recalled, assuring identical colour results with the correct amount of ink, while the operator only needs to enter the desired number of articles to be printed. GSE Ink manager software is now standard with GSE’s range of Colorsat dispensing systems for flexo, gravure and screen inks.

Long-term loyalty celebrated A

sahi Photoproducts, developer of flexographic photopolymer plates, have

reported that Cartotecnica Postumia, a producer of square-bottom bags for the food industry, customised shopping bags, and printed paper rolls for use in automatic

packaging machines, relies on Asahi AFP- DSF digital flexographic plates for delivery of the highest quality to its global customer base demands. Cartotecnica Postumia, who recently

celebrated its 50th year in business, has used Asahi plates for 25 years now. “Thema Studio is an expert, perfecting

its repro quality over the years,” says managing director Pierluigi Gava. “The excellent Asahi plate technology is the secret to our success. Thema Studio tells us that, while they do test other plates from time to time, these do not perform as well as the Asahi plates, requiring press stoppages for cleaning during runs and exhibiting other quality issues. We trust their advice.”

26 October 2018 At GSE’s Labelexpo Americas 2018 stand,

Ink manager was the main exhibit. Anne Lourens, managing director, GSE, comments, “Since it was launched at the beginning of 2018, Ink manager software has demonstrably delivered value, helping converters improve ink yields, provide quality assurance and accelerate decision-making. Visitors to Labelexpo Americas 2018 saw demonstrations at the GSE stand showing how this software provides the basis for running a lean and smart printing operation.” GSE’s Colorsat modular dispensing

systems for fast, accurate mixing and dispensing of flexo, gravure and screen inks are available for label, flexible packaging, paper, carton and corrugated board applications. UV, aqueous and solvent inks are

covered. Benefits are reduced setup times,

ink-yield improvements of over 30 per cent thanks to easy re-use of press-return inks, a cleaner colour mixing environment and better stock management. The company’s two automatic dispensers for label printing dispense spot colours in 1kg – 10kg volumes. The Colorsat Switch, for aqueous, UV- curable and solvent inks, features a dispensing unit and control cabinet, connected to a maximum of 20 exchangeable buckets of up to 25 kg, stored by modular waterfall frames. Optionally, high- volume components up to 1,000 litres can be connected. The Colorsat Match, with its small footprint, prepares aqueous and UV- curable inks from 20 base components, with fixed, refillable internal storage tanks as standard and optional external components.

In recognition of the quality the Asahi

plates helped the company achieve, Cartotecnica Postumia was honoured with a 1st Diamond Award for narrow web flexo print on paper and labels by FTA Europe in its second edition of the FTA Europe Diamond Awards in May 2018. Cartotecnica Postumia’s entry was printed in seven colours plus water-based matt varnish with a UV gloss varnish overcoat. “We could not have produced this award-winning entry without the quality we achieved using Asahi DSF plates,” Gava adds. “The Asahi AFP DSF is the best plate in the market for high quality paper printing on substrates ranging from abrasive kraft paper to coated liner.”
