Luxury Packaging Overwrap films

with a difference Innovia Films has been supplying BOPP overwrap films to the packaging industry for 50 years under the trademark, Propafilm.

I

nnovia manufactures Propafilm using a ‘bubble’ process, producing films with balanced orientation and properties. This enables the business to supply biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films with superior clarity and exceptional gloss. Ideal qualities for luxury products where on-shelf appeal of premium products is important. The films also have outstanding mechanical and balanced shrink properties, high stiffness and low elongation in the machine direction. Coupled with coating capabilities, this ensures that Innovia can offer a comprehensive range of BOPP films for luxury products.

Stephen Langstaff, business development manager, packaging at Innovia Films explains: “The perfume and cosmetic markets are some of the most demanding in terms product quality and brand image. We have developed a range of BOPP filmic overwrap solutions, ideally suited to wrap luxury products. These include glossy films to enhance shelf appeal, shrink tightening films for exceptional pack appearance and collation films. Demand continues to be led by customers who are satisfying consumer trends around the world with more technical solutions for fast growing sectors.”

The range includes Propafilm RC and RXD acrylic coated BOPP films that offer a barrier to water vapour, flavours and aromas, alongside superior optical properties, suited for overwrapping perfume and cosmetic boxes. The most recent addition to this range is Propafilm OFR which has been specifically designed for these markets. Mr Langstaff highlights: “Some coated films on the market suffer from whitening if sprayed with alcohol, a common occurrence with perfume tester sprays. OFR’s formulation delivers a film with scratch and alcohol resistance alongside outstanding overwrapping machine performance. This means the film does not turn white.” This is chlorine (PVdC) free, so is ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene films. “It’s also important to consider the Life Cycle

Assessment (LCA) of a packaging film,” explains Mr Langstaff. “OFR excels versus the traditional chlorine containing coated films that are used in this market, having a much lower environmental impact. It allows brands to continue to package their products to the same high standards, but with a film that does not contain PVdC and is therefore designed for recycling.”

The fact that this film has outstanding scratch and scuff resistance, means wrapped cosmetic boxes stay in pristine condition through the whole supply chain. This, coupled with OFR’s high gloss and clarity, means wrapped boxes will stand out on the shelf.

RECYCLED CONTENT

Another new range suitable for the luxury packaging market is Encore, a highly functional sustainable film range. These films are

manufactured from renewable non-food based raw materials, helping to reduce the use of fossil-based virgin raw materials. They can be manufactured to reduce the carbon footprint of the film or to be fully carbon neutral (cradle to gate). The renewable polymer for Encore is managed through ISCC PLUS chain of custody. They are suitable for use in the perfume and cosmetics industry.

The Encore film range can also be produced with the addition of post-consumer recycled content using chemically recycled polymer. Working with Interseroh, an Independent German recycling and consulting company, we have confirmed the recyclability of all our uncoated, acrylic coated, Strata and Encore range of BOPP films. All have achieved the ‘Made for recycling’ certification, validating that our polypropylene films are fully recyclable and can be classified as ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene.

COLLATION PACKS

Increasingly Brands are switching to using bundle or transit collation packaging which enables them to light weight by replacing traditional carton outer packaging.

“To meet this trend, we have developed a range of BOPP films specifically for collation packaging. Both Propafilm NC (uncoated) and SNC (shrink tightening uncoated) films have a low heat-seal threshold and do not seal to coextruded films used in individual packet wraps,” says Mr Langstaff.

These films ensure exceptional pack appearance allowing high visibility of the unit packs inside. The films are easily removed from the collation wrap without damaging the inner unit packs.

Innovia works closely with its customers to develop new products that meet the demands of the luxury packaging market and are open to discussing any new product developments.
