SHOW AND EXHIBITIONS IN 2020 We recently made some marketing personnel changes at Atlas and found whole new worlds of untapped markets, start-ups and existing happy customers who were unaware of efficiency upgrades available. Some of the shows have been a surprise as some of those previously been successful, but it appears there has been a shift in the way people look for new machines. More and more we get approaches from online research and less and less from shows. Whilst the shows are great to catch up with longstanding friends/ customers, we have made many deals but no initial leads from them in recent times. Our recent new website, forum and social media presence has been hugely well received and has pleasantly surprised us with great returns on investment. The forum has allowed existing customers to get the best from their Atlas and Titan machines whilst we have had many new start- ups approach from all over the world.

LATEST OFFERINGS We launched the Titan ER610-DT Compact Dual turret Slitter Rewinder, to maximise productivity, processing web widths up to 1650mm (65") at up to 600m/min (2000ft/min). From three years in research and

development, with multi-million-pound investment in new parts design and processes, this new Compact Slitter Rewinder demonstrates unparalleled build standards with solid and dependable engineering from the outset. The ER610-DT project ensured unequalled combinations of operator safety, yet huge productivity improvements and reduced machine download times. This model takes the compact elements of the ER610 and is considerably enhanced with the inclusion of Turret rewinding, automatic cross cut and independent rewind drives with options for both differential and lock rewinding capabilities. Our aim is to offer higher productivity and slitter efficiencies to a broad and price conscious market, whilst maintaining the pedigree and heritage for Titan build quality and reliability. We have developed a new “User Zone” on our website – a chat forum for all; end users,

incorporation of an Automatic Knife Positioning system that sets 10 male and female knives in less than 90 seconds as well as a job recipe memory system. The latter allows the machine to be

completely reset for the next job within minutes, without any manual intervention. This equates to huge efficiency savings and reductions in health and safety risks. We invest into a continuous R&D

Atlas and Titan Machine Owners, our staff; a real technical area for FAQs and discussions on converting; slitting and rewinding. The is a useful way of getting closer to our

customers; end users and machine owners, to knowledge share and even possibly a way of communicating new or common upgrades that may be useful to them. For more see atlasconverting.com/forum

MEETING CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS Slitting and rewinding represents the last step in the value-adding process, with slit rolls providing the barometer of converting quality. PPM reviews the latest technology developments that help converters to maximise productivity and quality. To maximise production efficiencies and

profits – for both narrow- and wide-web converters – printing, coating/laminating and slitting/rewinding departments need to operate as well-oiled teams. Rolls entering the slitting department represent considerable value in terms of material, energy and labour costs, making it vital for slitting and rewinding to be carried out as consistently and speedily as possible to deliver the highest percentage of rolls as finished goods.

CUTTING-EDGE AUTOMATION Converters are also having to cope with shorter runs and more just-in-time deliveries. This requires quick and efficient changeover time to set up a new job. As an example, the Titan SR9- DT machine facilitates this process through the

programme to refine the most efficient and market-leading ways of processing the wide range of materials used in different applications. When processing high volumes of reels, converters can keep the slitter’s productivity high by automating the slit reels’ unloading and handling systems. Automatic mother roll loading, for instance, enables more accurate, faster and safer loading as conveyer belts bring rolls to the machine. Automated delivery of rewind cores, on the other hand, enables quick and safe single-person operation. It also ensures that cores are delivered to the most ergonomically suitable position. Atlas Converting provides every type of handling system from semi-automatic to fully ‘hands off’ processing, including weighing, labelling (internal and external) palletising and delivery of the finished pallet to the warehouse.

EMBRACING INDUSTRY 4.0 Industry 4.0 standardises our machines sharing information from upstream and downstream processes. This increases efficiency of the complete manufacturing process. Wi-Fi communication through encrypted

network connection (LAN/WLAN) allows the whole process to function harmoniously. This offers knowledge for set ups on each permutation of materials, temperature, humidity and barometric pressure, from a centralised information resource. On the individual machine, this allows smart

monitoring and noting any issues before they may occur reducing unexpected down times; to pre-order any spares and monitor sensors live giving total measurement of the machine and its environment. All Titan machines have high-speed VPN

connections as standard to allow remote service. But as transmission speeds continue to increase, with the addition of some sensing equipment, the company is able to monitor machine running conditions in real time. This allows failures to be predicted before they happen, providing customers with the necessary warnings and guidance to resolve the issue(s). In the near future, it will be possible for machines to start learning how to best handle different materials and make adjustments completely autonomously through AI and learned information from the previously harvested data as above.
