Industry News 

 Editor’s Note

Hello and welcome to the March issue of Converter magazine. Spring has sprung, finally, and despite Brexit and coronavirus concerns, the converting industry is holding steadfast and continuing to innovate. The giant trade show drupa 2020, which would have

attracted 250,000 printers, has been postponed – for the first time in its history – and will now run next April instead of this June, and the organisers has also announced that they have postponed the major packaging event interpack, which was due to take place in May. Cancelling large industry events is of course inevitable in these uncertain times, and public safety and health is of course paramount, but people and companies are finding ways to communicate and promote their products and ideas to market, despite travel restrictions. In this issue, we’ve got a plethora of fantastic features showcasing the

latest and greatest in Slitting & Rewinding, what’s new with Flexible Packaging, as well as the new innovations coming from the Static Control & Web Cleaning sector. We’ve also got a couple of useful case studies identifying real-world applications for some marvellous machinery, including some of the newest automation available on the market. As ever, if you’d like to write an editorial article for the magazine, on

any given subject in the industry, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me by emailing nmarriott@datateam.co.uk. I am always looking for new ways to communicate your key issues and opinions. In the meantime, please enjoy reading this magazine. I hope you find it informative, intelligently curated and inordinately useful.

NMC launches new specialist coatings business service

Surfacing, drainage and civil engineering firm, NMC Group has launched a Specialist Coatings service bringing new expertise in commercial outdoor ground applications. The additional service will bolster the Group’s leading position in providing turnkey solutions for outside surfacing requirements. NMC Specialist Coatings introduces

innovative and sustainable solutions for waterproofing, street art and aesthetic asphalt for roads, car parks, walkways and other public spaces. It will open significant new opportunities for NMC where the company can extend its offer to existing, but also new clients. This investment responds to a growing market from both existing and new NMC customers with multi storey and roof level car parking, offering more durable and watertight resins and mastic asphalt using state of the art technology. It also offers new capabilities in decorative surface printing through pre-formed graphics and imprinted patterns for creative paving as a more cost-effective alternative to block paving. The aesthetic asphalt application responds to requirements for more bespoke and attractive applications for public spaces and walkways where more decorative systems and anti-slip coatings is possible. NMC Specialist Coatings is being headed up by industry expert Robert

Gourlay who has joined NMC Group from Eurovia Specialist Treatments where he was responsible for delivering a number of high-profile projects including the £2 million surfacing contract for the Olympic Park prior to the 2012 Games. Patrick McCracken, NMC Group CEO, said, “We are delighted to bring Robert

on-board to lead our exciting new Specialist Coatings function. After launching our new drainage service last year, we continue to invest in complimentary service capabilities to support our strategy and position NMC at the next level in providing complete turnkey solution for clients. “Not only can we take care of surfacing essentials but now we can provide durable and sustainable coatings and markings that are bespoke to each client. Bringing Robert into our team is a real asset to the business.”

convertermag.com Metsä Board joins forces with EPPA 

Metsä Board, a European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is one of the founding members of the recently established European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA). EPPA is a food and food service packaging association whose aim is to promote food safety, circular solutions, and lower carbon emissions as well as call for evidence-based policy making. The members represent leading raw material manufacturers and food and food service packaging producers. "I believe that EPPA has a really good and important message to

tell. Fibre-based food service packaging has a significant role in terms of food hygiene, public health and consumer safety. It is made of a renewable raw material – wood fibre. It is recyclable and also recycles well; in Europe paper and board packaging recycling rates are over 80 per cent. That is circular economy at its best,” said Risto Auero, sales director, Metsä Board Food Service Boards.
