Jet Label commits to total platform redundancy at primary facility
Mark Andy makes strategic sale in Poland
Jet Label & Packaging, a Canadian producer of labels and printed tape for a broad range of industries, has announced its commitment to total platform redundancy at its primary manufacturing facility in Edmonton. Acquiring duplicates of critical machinery and components brings speed and economic benefits for customers, and minimises risk by diminishing delay due to scheduled or sudden machinery downtime. The redundancy is necessary to maintain customer satisfaction while growing double digits annually. At its Edmonton production plant, Jet Label has doubled up on all equipment – including the twin HP Indigo Digital Presses and Delta Die Cutters. Other couplings include a pair of wide presses, eight colour flexo presses, and rewinders for each press width. The company is also moving toward complete redundancy at its Coquitlam, British Columbia facility, which it secured by acquiring United Label Company last year. With proper preventive maintenance, today’s flexo and digital machines
remain robust and rarely experience unforeseen mechanical breakdown. For printing industry manufacturers like Jet Label, commitment to total
redundancy is a calculated risk. Despite obvious benefits of production consistency and customer reassurance, manufacturers typically make infrastructure investments based on anticipated business needs. Jet Label’s decision in adding redundant equipment has been realised across platforms, with causes like unexpected downtime, unexpected operator availability to unexpected growth.
In what is claimed as a significant milestone in its growing market penetration in Europe, Mark Andy has made a conquest sale to leading Polish label converter Mal-Pol, based in Olesin, some 35km east of the capital city Warsaw. The new Performance Series P5 press is the first from the American manufacturer to be installed at what has traditionally been a European press user. Speaking for Mark Andy, European managing director Tom Cavalco said: “This was a key sale to secure, as it breaks the grip of our competitors and highlights the added benefits that the Performance Series offers converters who are looking to diversify into more profitable market sectors.” The P5 press in question is a highly specified 8-colour flexo line, with a 430mm (17-inch) web width fitted with dual unwind and rewind, web cleaning, corona treater, and web turn bars, as well as chilled impression rolls. It has a cold foil capability, and for consistent high quality, an automatic register system. At the converting section, it is fitted with a Gizmo, and there is gap control of the QCDC unit before the waste is rewound on Mark Andy’s new zero gap windup unit. The new Mark Andy, which joins a variety of existing flexo and digital
presses, has been specified to allow Mal-Pol to develop its peel/reseal label business. The Gizmo unit allows it to produce multi-layer labels, hence the need for dual unwind and rewind, making the press a highly versatile performerTraditionally, Mal-Pol has supplied labels to the food, cosmetics, automotive, and industrial markets, such as fuel oil. Substrates processed are principally paper-based and laminated foil. It has its own in-house ink kitchen and is fully self-suficient for pre-press. It is in the process of adding a 1,400 sqm extension to its 2,000 sqm facility, after which it intends to add BRC accreditation to its existing ISO status. Currently, the company staff of 100 operates a triple-shift pattern, and Mal-Pol is looking to grow its business by investing in more eficient technology.
