Coating transforms paper and board into recyclable alternative to wax

repulpable paper and boxes that resist moisture, oil and grease. Historically, polyethylene and wax coatings have been used to seal porous paper, corrugated boxes and sheets to provide a moisture barrier and/or moisture-vapour barrier to these substrates. The resulting paper product is an environmental problem and cannot be recycled through normal channels. In contrast, papers or linerboard coated with EcoShield Barrier Coating remain fully recyclable and repulpable, while achieving a very low moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) comparable to that of polycoated or waxed paper. The coating also has a high kit value rating of 12, indicating excellent oil and grease resistance. Manufacturers can increase a paper’s level of moisture resistance by applying a thicker coating of EcoShield Barrier to the paper or linerboard substrate, If desired. The dual moisture and grease resistance of EcoShield Barrier Coating creates a packaging

B

material that helps seal out moisture or other contaminants, which could damage packaged goods, while protecting against leakage or packaging failure for items that have greasy characteristics. The application of EcoShield barrier coating also enhances a paper’s physical properties such as burst, tear and tensile strength; and elongation, folding endurance, coefficient of friction and smoothness. It can be applied by most common paper roll coaters, including gravure, flex, air-knife, and reverse-roll. Drying temperature is 180° - 200°F (82°- 93°C). Suggested coating weights are 8 -11lbs per 3,000sqft ream (13-18g/m2

).

Additional ATEX certification for Fraser Anti-Static 2018

Fraser Anti-Static has secured additional ATEX dust certification for it is latest generation of EX1250 static elimination bars. Although the current EX1250 bar has had an ATEX gas

rating for a number of years, this certification gives what Fraser CEO, Bruce Clothier, described as “market leading performance and flexibility.” Clothier added: “Our latest generation of EX1250 bars can now be used in a broader range of manufacturing environments, from food processing to machining and timber processing. This will give customers peace of mind, knowing that they can still achieve the same high levels of production performance, without the inherent risk of explosion that comes with static electricity and gas or dust environments.” The latest EX1250 bar is also approved for use in

environments where there are flyings, combustible dust and fibres. For further details on the EX1250 or the type of

products needed within gas or dust environments, please contact Fraser Anti-Static on Tel: 01398 331 114.

BPIF awards Celloglas the HR seal of excellence

Celloglas, the UK’s leading specialist in decorative print finishing, is celebrating this month having achieved the BPIF HR Seal of Excellence Award across all three sites, demonstrating their commitment to their growing team and making them a key part of the company’s future vision. Stacey Bromley, of the BPIF HR team who co- ordinates the HR activity across all three sites in Reading, Leicester and Leeds with Celloglas, said: ”This is brilliant news for the team who've been

striving for HR consistency across the business." To achieve the Seal of Excellence for HR, a minimum score of 80 per cent must be scored on the HR Healthcheck undertaken by a BPIF Adviser who agrees the company position, and makes recommendations of any improvements needed. Richard Gillgrass, Celloglas MD said: “This is a great accolade and reflects the hard work that has gone into harmonising things across our sites. The BPIF HR Seal of Excellence Award is a great way for individuals, departments and businesses to demonstrate their expertise both internally and to the print industry.” “We are delighted to have achieved this award and Celloglas is committed to continued

improvement and development over the coming years. Our team is diverse from machine operators to head office management and it’s fantastic to be working within a culture where everyone feels valued. We have ambitious plans for this year and this feels like a great platform from which we can move forward as a strong business, and team”.

Mondi joins WWF’s Climate Savers business leadership programme

Mondi Group has joined the ranks of global climate leaders by signing up to Climate Savers, WWF’s climate leadership programme for businesses. The packaging and paper group commits to reduce its specific production-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 0.25 tonnes, CO2

e per tonne production by 2050. This commitment and others made as part of its

participation in the flagship programme are in line with climate science targets required to limit global temperature rise to under 2°C. Mondi’s participation in Climate Savers is an extension of a strategic global partnership between Mondi and WWF that started in 2014. The partnership focuses on promoting environmental stewardship in the packaging and paper sector. In joining Climate Savers, Mondi commits to working to further reduce GHG emissions across its entire value chain and to taking actions to positively influence the packaging and paper industry as well as policy makers. Climate Savers members aim to transform businesses into low-carbon economy leaders. To achieve its climate goals, Mondi has developed an ambitious programme to improve energy efficiency, replace fossil fuels

with renewable energy, sustainably manage its forests and associated ecosystems, and source its raw materials responsibly. Mondi is also active in developing products that help its customers and consumers reduce their own carbon footprints.

HERMA grows, recruiting 100 new employees

Sales of self-adhesive materials, labels, and labelling machines are continuing on a positive trend. Herma has once again posted record sales for the 2017 fiscal year, outgrowing the market. Revenues increased by 6.5 per cent from €321.5m to a new total of €342.3m. According to managing directors Sven Schneller and Dr Thomas Baumgärtner, Herma will therefore create just under 100 new jobs – predominantly in development, production, and sales. Creating new production capacities is just as important. At the end of this year, the new plant for the growing Labelling Machines Division at the headquarters in Filderstadt will be commissioned as scheduled. The Self-Adhesive Materials Division, which is also growing at a fast rate, will start its new production facilities in autumn 2019 according to plan. They are currently being built on the eight-hectare area, directly adjacent to the company’s headquarters that the self-adhesives specialist bought three years ago.
