Carton, Paper & Board
Why should converters consider switching their packaging to a paper-based solution?
In an exclusive interview, Skye Oudemans, sustainability manager Europe, Sonoco, told Converter’s interim editor, Simon King, that as governments in the UK and across Europe impose stricter regulations on plastic use, brands and manufacturers are looking for suitable and sustainable substitutes and paper packaging provides a reliable, recyclable and compliant alternative.
P
aper-based solutions are easily recyclable in household waste streams and support the circular economy.
Ms Oudemans said: “From a functional viewpoint paper packaging keeps products fresh when barrier properties are included, and it also physically protects the product – all while being recyclable. Compared with other substrates, paper packaging is also lightweight and easier to transport, therefore helping to reduce emissions in the transportation process, as well as shipping costs. “In addition, as consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever, switching to a paper-based solution can help to improve brand perception.”
SK: Are there long-term fi nancial benefi ts for businesses to switch their packaging to a to paper-based solution? SO: By converting to paper-based packaging solutions, brands can profi t from a number of long- term benefi ts and many of our customers who have switched to paper-based solutions are already reaping them.
In 2022, Premier Foods removed 40 tonnes of packaging used for its best-selling Bisto gravy drum, resulting in reduced carbon footprint with our rigid paper cans, while at the same time helping its customers to make more sustainable choices. In addition, by using Sonoco’s recyclable packaging, the new Bisto container gave shoppers an additional 20g of gravy granules (190g total) – approximately six more portions per tub – for the exact same price as before, while being presented in packaging that uses fewer resources.
Marigold health foods has also converted to Sonoco’s paper can for its plant-based food products, which ensures product freshness and optimal shelf- life by providing an oxygen and moisture barrier. By transitioning to Sonoco’s paper-based packaging, Marigold confi rmed its commitment to its customers
