setting. Now and then, we change the load cell positions with each other to see if the load cells have stable measurements and that they measure accurately. The results are excellent every time!”

DISPLAYING ULTIMATE RELIABILITY The Arctic Paper Munkedal’s mill is one of the most environmentally friendly paper mills in the world and has been relying on Pressductor load cells since 2003.

“The Pressductor PillowBlock load cells are very robust and stable in the measurements and they work very well in the rough production environments,” said Kaj Albertsson, manager for the electrical department.

Despite their robust reputation compared to alternative technologies, even Pressductor installations are not entirely foolproof. Poor installation can impact the ability of even the toughest gauge to deliver long and reliable service.

It’s easy to underestimate the tendency of the roll structure to fl ex when subjected to tension in the web, while roll misalignment, improper bearing selection and a failure to take temperature-related expansion and contraction into account can all contribute to the creation of ‘irrelevant’ forces that can falsify measurement values.

However, it’s impossible to argue with the improvement that magnetoelastic gauges deliver in all-round performance. They are forgiving of excessive loads, electrical and temperature interference, contaminants and imperfections in specifi cation and installation in a way that rival technologies simply cannot match.

PRESSDUCTOR SOLUTIONS IN ACTION Ahlstrom-Munksjö Paper Billingsfors’ paper machines and winders rely on Pressductor PillowBlock load cells and Pressductor Radial Tensiometers (PRT load cells) to provide accurate web tension measurement in its Swedish paper mill. The company had some especially tough requirements on one of its machines, which produces very thin paper with low tension and heavy rolls. The wrap angle was also tricky, sometimes forcing operators to use a defl ector roll and further complicating the overall set-up. “Ever since the Pressductor PillowBlock load cells were installed and commissioned in our paper machines they have been running very well without any problems. ABB Pressductor load cells are very robust and durable,” said paper mill manager Lars-Eric Aronsson.

But perhaps the biggest vote of confi dence is that Arctic Paper does not need to stock any spare load cells, according to Mr. Albertsson: “We don’t have any spare load cells, since the ABB load cells never break.” When it fi rst hit the market 70 years ago, Pressductor technology from ABB off ered a step change in the reliability of load cells for tough industrial environments. Today, these load cells can be found everywhere that companies are relying on tension measurement to optimize the production of strips and webs, including paper mills and other industries such as steel production.

In fact, he noted that the ABB load cells are so robust that engineers have even been known to stand on them while climbing around the machines, without any damage: “For sure, you can step on a Pressductor load cell without breaking it; that is a big advantage.” Meanwhile, Mechanical Engineer Mikael Pettersson added that the load cells in the company’s winding machine for coated paper are extremely stable: “In the winder we have Pressductor Radial Tension- meters, PRT load cells. They are very robust and give very stable signals.”

STABILITY NEVER WAVERS

Shanghai Prosperous Paper (SPP) is a quality newsprint producer based in China. SPP has relied on ABB tension measurement systems since the late 1990s when the mill was built. SPP is very happy with the stable measurement performance of its ABB Pressductor® load cells, which also help deliver high mill availability. Zou Pei Yong, Deputy Section Chief, Electricity/ Instrument Section, said: “The ABB Pressductor load cells have very stable measurements, and they are very robust and durable.” “We are very happy with the ABB tension electronics performance and one good example is that there is never any problem with zero-

While there have been upgrades and tweaks to the technology in the intervening decades, it’s still impossible to argue with the improvement that magnetoelastic gauges deliver in all-round performance when compared to the alternatives for measuring web tension.

WHY PRESSDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY IS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR WEB TENSION MEASUREMENT • Pressductor transducers rely on the magnetoelastic eff ect, which is more robust than measurement systems based on bending or stretching the measuring elements.

• They can withstand overloads up to 10 times the nominal force.

• They exhibit minimal defl ection under industrial loads, enhancing measurement stability.

• Pressductor systems are resistant to environmental factors such as electrical interference, contamination, and corrosion.

• They can help to reduce web breaks and associated downtime.

• Precise tension control improves product quality.

• They have lower maintenance requirements and a long service life.
