Identifying gaps in the market and opportunities to support SMEs

AA Labels specialises in designing, producing and printing labels for every major market and industry sector

E

stablished in 2006, the Peterborough based business manufactures and distributes plain and printed labels in a range of materials, adhesives and finishes for commercial, industrial, specialist and home use throughout Europe and further afield, with customers as far afield as Canada, Argentina, America, Australia and Hong Kong. It has continually identified gaps in the market and opportunities to support small to medium sized businesses with services not traditionally offered by other suppliers. For instance, it was first to market with a Click & Collect service, which although targeted at its local customer base, attracts a range of customers across East Anglia and East Midlands regions. Following the launch of the service, AA Labels saw customer demand increase by 20% as customers looked to make cost saving efficiencies for orders by reducing postage costs balanced with a quicker turnaround time.

It is an attractive offer for businesses who are happy to collect an order from the door between three to five days after being placed, and who want to take advantage of no delivery charges. There are no limits on order size, other than the exclusion of palleted orders.

SUPPORTING CUSTOMER DEADLINES The service has recently advanced, with those customers with time-sensitive online orders taking advantage of Click & Collect Plus. This enhanced offer guarantees orders will be ready within two hours, saving valuable time when urgent orders need to be processed and delivered.

DESIGN SUPPORT ON AND OFFLINE AA Labels has enhanced its labelling solutions by offering a design service for all customers. In recent months there has been an increase in demand for its creative support, as customers look to enhance brand awareness in tough trading conditions, and

in response, AA Labels is currently offering a 20% discount on this service.

With many smaller businesses not able to employ designers, AA Labels in-house professional creative team can produce high quality designs that add value to a range of products, adding product differentiation. Its team has extensive experience in branding and design insights for a range of sectors. This is especially useful for smaller businesses building ‘kitchen table’ products, such as jams, pickles, chutneys and sauces.

LUXURY MARKET SOLUTIONS

More luxurious brands also benefit from enhanced labelling solutions, especially those that are being sold online and not seen on a shop shelf. Consideration needs to be given to how those products being sold via eCommerce can ‘leap off the digital shelf’ as customer interaction is limited. AA Labels advises that how a product looks on screen need to be incorporated into the design process and this is where mass market brands are increasingly adopting luxury labelling techniques to appeal to digital audiences, such as beauty brands.

CONVEYING PRESTIGE

The use of label embellishments in beauty branding has increased as the technology has become more affordable and more sophisticated. AA Labels reports that the most successful beauty brands share many similarities across their branding and product labelling, such as embossing, metallic hot foil printing and UV spot printing detailing, which can easily be conveyed online and adds to their coveted status. Shoaib Akram from AA Labels, said: “Trading conditions are tough so we have looked at ways that we can support businesses and improve their bottom line. Many customers have a good idea of how they want to market a product, but don’t have

the design skills to translate these ideas onto a label – whether it’s destined for a shop shelf or online. We can look at the idea and not only offer advice but can assist in the design process.

“In addition, by offering an enhanced online experience both with the ordering process and our Click & Collect Plus service, we hope to take some of the stress away from those businesses looking to order labels.”

FUTURE OF LABELLING SOLUTIONS With data from eMarketer revealing that scans of QR codes nearly doubled to 25% in 2020, which was up from 13% in 2021, businesses also need to give consideration to ‘smart’ labelling. QR codes can be used to communicate with customers via product labels, presenting additional information in a range of formats, including images, web pages and videos once scanned.

By incorporating QR codes into label designs, additional consumer engagement can be gained particularly of incentives such as discount codes and personalised offers are on offer.

AA Labels range of labelling solutions, which includes Reverse Registration Mark and bespoke template, die and sizes can be found at www. aalabels.com.
