Labelling Solutions

Cost effective flexibility and high quality on demand

By Dayle Guy, business development manager, Epson (UK). R

aw material costs, energy prices, supply chain challenges and greater demand for environmentally conscious solutions are among the market pressures that will continue to impact the labelling sector in the coming months. They are all set to influence customer decisions making and shaping production approaches. Fortunately, there are a number of ways digital label production solutions can help operations address those pressures. For example, making a more sustainable choice is enabled by liner-less label technology. It reduces waste by eliminating the need for a peelable backing while also facilitating the cost-effective production of customisable labels. Epson’s TM-L100 liner-less label printer supports a range of media, including thick and highly adhesive media, to help create a variety of permanent and semi-permanent labels. This makes it ideal for retail and hospitality businesses, including fast-food retail chains, restaurants, food delivery services, ghost kitchens, supermarkets, convenient stores, and catering. Digital print also enables the printing on demand of only what is needed rather than pre- printing hundreds, or even thousands of labels, that then may go to waste if ingredients are changed, or information is updated. This is particularly pertinent for the pharmaceutical industry. With patient safety

paramount, the product labelling of devices or solutions with consistently reliable results is vital. Epson Partner AM Labels, an award-winning supplier of complete labelling solutions, stocks the full Epson ColorWorks range. Flexible and cost effective, the systems provide businesses with full control over their label printing requirements. They enhance the quality and readability of essential information such as patient details and dosage instructions. Patient safety is promoted while traceability is improved, errors are minimised, and operational risks are reduced. Epson’s Colorworks range forms part of the core offering of The Barcode Warehouse as well. It recently opened its Innovation and Customer Experience Centre featuring the latest business technology. Customers can see first-hand how new technologies can solve their business challenges and increase their productivity. There are numerous enhanced service opportunities Epson technologies can help operations deliver as well. For example, Netto chose the Epson ColorWorks C3500 desktop colour label printer as a smart time saving solution to improve business operations in 1,200 stores across Denmark and Poland. Netto is using the solution to produce labels inhouse and on demand in small volumes for streamlined price communication. The aim was to ensure better

customer experience and to make it easier for staff. The investment has resulted in a reduction of waste paper, quicker and simpler price tag management, and more attractive labels including the ability to add additional information such as coloured logos and flags. In the UK, The Human Milk Foundation, a charity that provides human donor milk to babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), also uses the C3500 to print around 9,000 labels each month for donor milk bottles. To ensure donor milk meets regulatory labelling standards, special labels designed to withstand pasteurisation temperatures of 65 degrees and freezing temperatures of minus 22 degrees are provided by labels specialist Magnum Materials. The easy-to-operate Epson ColorWorks family produces large quantities of labels on demand, while offering businesses the flexibility to respond instantly to regulation changes. This reduces costs and improves workflows. It prints high resolution text and barcodes without compromising on readability, even when small fonts are required. The range includes the entry level C4000 colour label printer ideal for businesses with small to mid-volume labelling requirements. In addition to combining a compact footprint with enhanced wireless connectivity options, the printer is available in either a gloss ink version or matte ink model. There is also the Epson C6000, C6500 and C7500 colour label printers, ensuring businesses can find a suitable model to meet their needs, requirements, and budget.

We also expect to see growing interest in print- and-apply processes with Epson robotics being used to automate the labelling process. Options include the GX4 and GX8 high-power-density SCARA robots that deliver next level performance and flexibility ideal for medical device, electronics, and consumer electronics industries. There is also the Scara T6 Robot Series. The highly compact, versatile entry level production robot is great for automating handling materials.

No matter what the industry challenge digital print can provide a robust response that allows operations to produce high quality labels on demand flexibly and cost effectively.
