Company Focus Export expansion into material

handling and processing Technical director Shaun Peel shares an insight into how the British machinery manufacturer MattressTek is converting its leads in the foam processing and material handling markets.

W

ith over 40 years of experience, it has been a busy few months for the company, made up of a mix of designers and engineers. Having maintained its position as a provider of quality, robust and reliable production lines for the bed industry and beyond, Innovation and problem solving remain at its core.

The past year has seen them invest in several areas across the business; a refreshed website, new product updates, growing of its workforce and system enhancements just some of their most recent developments.

“We have cemented ourselves as one of the leaders in the making of machines for the mattress industry, and our range has proven popular with clients and big brands in the UK, US, Mexico, Europe and Australia, with the British made machines being designed and built from our site in Lancashire. We’re proud to be supporting the inevitable transition into automation and industry 4.0.”

“There are a whole host of machines needed to help manufacturers to make their products to a high quality - positioning, stuffing, stitching, sewing, spring unbaling, slitting, gluing, turning, flipping, inspecting, re-rolling and packing. Automation is literally the way forward.” “Our machines meet those needs and allow seamless production, ensure efficiency, reduce downtime and increase the volume and output

of products made. Automating the process also helps to deal with the labour lag the industry is currently facing globally.”

Fellow Director, Michael Birtwistle said: “We have refined and developed our machines, with regard to design and the hardware and technology, to adapt them to fit into limited space at factories, as well as incorporating sensors to flag up when material runs out, threads break and bottlenecks occur.”

The expansion of its offerings has coincided with other internal investments too: “We have been able to attract local skilled workers. In fact, we have tripled our workforce over the last two years. Adding to this growth, we have invested in internal systems to make it a safe, efficient, enjoyable and productive space to work.” Michael added: “Although we are busy fulfilling orders of our customers throughout the UK, 70% of our production is exported across the globe and this spread will continue to grow.” Continuing success with big names in the mattress and bed manufacturing field, they have installed the seventh full automation conveyor line for a customer in America, which culminated a total of 60 machines, including 33 conveyors, as well as bespoke individual machines and partial lines to fit into existing production at factories all across the UK.

Following their presence as an exhibitor at Foam Expo Europe in Stuttgart, they have been

busy following up on the enquiries gained from processor of industrial foam, for use in mattress production, as well as companies who have a requirement for their rolling and slitting machines in the flooring industry. This further reinforces the fact that their conveyors, border cutting and panel stitching machines can be used in other industries, processing all kinds of materials, not just the manufacturing of mattresses. They have received referrals and

recommendations from the lines they installed last year with a big name they are already well- established with who was exhibiting, including orders for rolling, packing, stitching, stamping/ labelling and foam transportation systems to move foam blocks and buns around vast factories and facilities. One of these involved transporting foam blocks from a saw to multiple lines of conveyors, using three straight-line belt conveyors on a track - their ‘Shuttle’ conveyor. “We have been honoured to be recommended by current customers, to both their internal teams and other departments across the world, as well as their network of fellow manufacturers, in the foam processing and transportation fields.” As a finalist in the International Trade category of The Manufacturer TMMX Awards and having made it to the second stage of the Insider North West International Trade Awards’ Innovation and Under £20m Company of the Year categories, the company says: “We have increased our marketing presence exponentially in the past year and to be a finalist in these awards, to further get our brand and range our into the industry, is credit to the hard work of the whole team in ensuring we can provide reliable, robust and efficient machines, designed and build to meet the needs of our customers and help them to optimise production.”

“The installation of our machines in full automated production lines has fed our already established growth and we have been able to document these innovations through case studies, which are now included on our website.”
