UK Extrusion honoured at Plastics Industry Awards
L
uigi Bandera partner company, UK Extrusion, recently broke new ground representing the film and sheet sector, when it reached the
final three in the UK Plastics Industry Awards. The Plastics Industry Awards is an annual
event, 17 years long, which recognises and rewards achievement and excellence by supplier companies, plastics processors, young designers, apprentices and trainees. Judged by a panel of industry experts, the awards also honour an ‘Unsung Hero’ and an ‘Ambassador’ for the plastics industry. For the first time, in what has traditionally been
an injection moulding orientated final, UK Extrusion was a finalist in the category Supplier Partnership — Prime Machinery. Competing against some of the largest injection moulding machine manufacturers in the world, the company was excited to find itself a finalist as a result of its work with its client TDX Thermodynamix. Following a surge in demand during the peak season of 2016, Tyne and Wear-based TDX was left incapable of meeting existing customers increased requirements. The decision was made to purchase a new PET Rigid Film Extrusion Line to cope with the increased orders. For a line built to its exacting standards, TDX recognised that there would be a relatively long lead time. So, it was important to select a partner that could deliver the project on time and have it fully operational in time for 2017’s peak season
commencing in late May. An additional driver was the company’s pipeline of innovation and new product development projects, which could not be commercialised without additional new capacity. This new capacity will enable TDX to go to market with more innovative and value-added products. Mark Prinn, managing
director of TDX, says, “One of the primary benefits of partnering with UK Extrusion was that they arranged for us to visit the Bandera plant in Italy and fully wet test the production line prior to delivery. This allowed us to be confident that on delivery we could hit the ground running and start to meet increased customer requirements on time despite the very tight timescale. The Bandera ‘House of Extrusion’ Technical Centre offers industry leading customer facilities and a team of dedicated wet test technical personnel were supplied to ensure the testing and de-bugging of the production line was a smooth and efficient process.” As the machine construction approached completion, UK Extrusion liaised with both Bandera and TDX regarding the installation
timescale and personnel allocated to the installation at TDX. In order to meet the tight timescales Bandera and UK Extrusion went the extra mile to re-allocate resources, which enabled the installation and start up period to be reduced from six to four weeks thus enabling TDX to meet contracted commitments for supply. Since the start of production, TDX is now fully operational around the clock with the new production line 100 per cent utilised at high overall efficiency compared to existing production lines. The new production line incorporates many technical changes from the previous line aimed at improving product quality, clarity and I.V.

An introduction to the FX500e Foil Imprinting System
P
rimera Technology Europe, the European headquarter of the manufacturer of specialty printers, Primera Technology, has recently
announced its new FX500e Foil Imprinting System. FX500e is Primera’s new and improved foil
imprinter, adding brilliant metallic highlights to pre- printed or blank labels. It is an accessory to Primera’s LX- and CX-Series colour label printers and other laser- or inkjet-based label printers. As the imprinting process is digital, virtually any design elements can be added to the label including borders, fonts, graphics and backgrounds. Metallic foils enhance product labels, as this conveys a message of luxury and elegance that emphasises the quality and value of each product. Metallic foils in gold, silver, blue and red are
available as well as various spot colours and clear foil. When printed onto pre-printed labels, clear foil not only adds a professional, glossy finish, but also makes labels virtually waterproof and UV resistant; allowing longer exposure to natural and artificial light sources. Additionally, the clear film

adds a high degree of resistance to chemicals, cleaning solutions and other harsh environmental factors. Fast print speeds and a low
purchasing price allow users to quickly and cost-efficiently produce shiny labels on- demand in the amount that is actually needed. FX500e costs less than the foil imprinter it replaced, which was called FX400e. The MSRP of Primera’s FX500e is €99 while the FX400e was priced at €599. Additional features include: 300m ribbon
capacity; easy media and ribbon loading with an improved guiding mechanism to secure the label path; optimised printing results; reduced printing noise; and easy and hassle-free maintenance The FX500e is easy to set-up and operate.
Printer drivers are included for Windows XP/7/10 along with BarTender Ultralite and NiceLabel Free
2017 Primera Edition Software (both for Windows), four colour ribbon starter rolls and an external supply adapter for 25mm or 76mm (one or three inch) roll cores, holding larger input rolls of up to 216mm (8.5-inch) outer diameter. Primera Europe continues to offer 24 months
warranty (the standard 12 months plus additional 12 months for free upon product registration on its website) for all European units.
