This shift is supported by the increasing availability of high-quality, healthier options, making it easier for operators to stock products that align with consumer demand for better nutrition. Regulatory influences, such as the sugar levy and the Government Buying Standards, have played a crucial role in shaping the market. For instance, 81% of pre-packaged cold drinks now contain less than 5g of added sugar per 100ml, a substantial increase from just 44% in 2017. Similarly, 78% of confectionery and sweet lines now have 250kcal or fewer, compared to 35% in 2017, and 36% of savoury snacks are now limited to 30g, up from 22% in 2017. These changes highlight the industry’s adjustment to stricter guidelines and consumer expectations. In terms of market performance, the demand for vended snacks


has grown, with weekly consumption per confectionery and snack machine rising from £68 in 2022 to £74 in 2023, an increase of 9%. This rise in consumption is coupled with an 11.5% increase in average vending prices, reflecting both inflationary pressures and the higher value placed on healthier snack options. Overall, the UK’s vended snack market is evolving rapidly, driven by a combination of health trends and regulatory measures, leading to a more health-conscious and profitable sector.
