From Farm to Foam – Sustainably sourced semi-skimmed milk powder from Caprimo®

Key appointment for WaterCare

WaterCare has announced that former commercial director at Abbeychart, Linzi Sahota-Moore has joined the team in a new role of vending & beverage division sales manager. A WaterCare statement said that in an area where the company is looking to expand its market share, Linzi’s 20+ years’ experience and knowledge together with her standing within the industry is an ideal platform to build on as well as offering a new challenge that Linzi is looking forward to take on. Managing director Steve Slark said: “Having had the privilege of working with Linzi before, I know that she will be a great asset and bring huge experience and knowledge to the WaterCare team both here in the UK and to our international affiliates. “At a time where companies are having to look into ways of

increasing and maintaining business, this is one of many new ventures undertaken by WaterCare including the launch of the new IX V2 range of “Green” cartridge filters and recycling program. Linzi said she was “thrilled” to be joining the WaterCare team, stating: “I start a new career on Tuesday, and I can’t wait! New beginnings and very excited to be joining a great team.”

Barry Callebaut Beverages has launched a new semi-skimmed milk powder under the Caprimo® brand. The easy-to- use powder has an indulgent, creamy texture that delivers an outstanding, stable foam. With 1.5% fat for a superior taste of fresh milk, the spray dried milk powder has excellent machine functionality and dissolves easily in any hot beverage. Sales director Tracy Southwell comments: “Closing the gap to the High Street remains an important focus for our customers. Many coffee shops use semi-skimmed milk when crafting a hot drink, it’s important that we provide an equivalent product for our vending customers too.” Caprimo semi skimmed uses milk that

is sustainably sourced and complies with Barry Callebaut’s VisionDairy Charter. The Charter sets out 15 principles for sustainable dairy farming across three areas: cow welfare, farm performance and environmental stewardship.Tracy continues: “We are delighted that Caprimo semi-skimmed milk meets the long-term consumer trends for premiumisation and sustainable sourcing. In recent years, many of our customers have successfully dialled up the quality of their coffee offer and Caprimo semi-skimmed milk can enhance that experience even further”.

Mondelez trials digital watermarks for smarter packaging recycling

Mondelez International has partnered with AIM – the European Brands Association – alongside other European companies and organisations, to trial a pioneering digital technology, to assess whether it could enable better sorting and higher-quality recycling rates for packaging in the EU. One of the biggest obstacles to creating

a circular economy is the sorting of post- consumer waste by accurately identifying packaging, which would result in more efficient and higher-quality recycling. As part of a cross-value chain initiative under the name of “HolyGrail 2.0”, an industrial pilot has been launched to prove the

viability of digital watermark technologies for more accurate sorting of packaging and higher-quality recycling, as well as the business case at scale. This collaboration forms part of Mondelez international’s global strategy to deliver against its long-term vision for zero-net waste packaging by 2025. Michael Stumpf, Europe RDQ packaging sustainability manager, Mondelez International said: “We are excited to be joining this innovative pilot. HolyGrail 2.0 is a further step towards our goal of zero-net waste packaging by 2025. We want to remove barriers to recycling efficiency and believe that when business unites under a common goal, we can create positive impact at scale for people and planet. Digital watermarks are imperceptible

codes, the size of a postage stamp, covering the surface of a consumer goods

packaging. They can carry a wide range of attributes such as manufacturer, SKU, type of plastics used and composition for multilayer objects, food vs. non-food usage. The aim is that once the packaging has

entered into a waste sorting facility, the digital watermark can be detected and decoded by a standard high-resolution camera on the sorting line, which then – based on the transferred attributes – is able to sort the packaging into corresponding streams. This would result in better and more

accurate sorting streams, and thus consequently in higher-quality recyclates, benefiting the complete packaging value chain. Next to this “digital recycling passport”, digital watermarks also have the potential to be used in other areas such as consumer engagement, supply chain visibility and retail operations.
