NEWS | Industry Updates Huhtamaki produces face shields for healthcare workers in

Northern Ireland Packaging specialist Huhtamaki has produced face shields for healthcare workers together with a local partner in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Initially, four million face shields were being produced per week

for HSCNI, the publicly funded service which provides health and social care services in Northern Ireland, but Huhtamaki planned to ramp up the production to six million per week and was investigating whether the shields could be produced in other locations, too. Huhtamaki also donated its products to healthcare systems, for

example over six million foodservice products to hospitals and nursing homes in Europe to ensure food hygiene and safety, and it is looking at other opportunities to help going forward. The packaging giant has also announced a donation of ¤0.5 million in support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) COVID-19 appeal. The funds will be channeled via Finnish Red Cross to go towards boosting emergency relief efforts in Asia and Europe and improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable. Charles Héaulmé, president and CEO of Huhtamaki said: “Huhtamaki plays an essential role in ensuring food safety and

Inspirational businessman Damien Lee, known in vending circles for his innovative noodle kiosks, is doing everything he can to help the NHS – to give back something to the service which has given him so much. To help key workers during the

coronavirus crisis his company, Mr Lee’s Pure Foods, has donated over 5,000 noodle cups to frontline NHS workers. He is also inviting businesses that would

like to donate a pallet of noodles to key workers or NHS to do the same. Mr Lees will top it up with 30 per more cups and provide delivery. For five years Damien has battled cancer

key workers Burts Snacks, one of the UK’s independent snack producers, is supporting local key workers across the South West. The Plymouth and Leicester based business has committed to sending regular snack packs to local hospitals, police stations, food banks and council offices. After the government announced a definitive list of key workers, Burts began to supply

those on the frontline with a selection of its potato chips and Lentil Waves to show its support for their continued efforts in the fight against COVID-19. David Nairn at Burts Snacks commented: “As a longstanding member of the local

community, we’re immensely proud of our South West heritage, therefore we only feel it right to support those around us in their time of need. “We’re all in awe of the effort and commitment key workers are showing during this challenging time and as a producer of snack products, we feel it’s our duty to give what we can to help in the effort against COVID-19.”

availability and reducing food waste, as acknowledged by governments internationally. This contribution is only one part of our support towards alleviating the impact of the pandemic globally. We have partnered with the International Red Cross, a leading global organisation, to do our share in helping tackle the humanitarian aspect of the COVID-19 crisis. This emergency affects us all, regardless of where we are around the world and together we can make a difference where it is most needed. “It is important for industry to do its part in helping the fight

against COVID-19. Huhtamaki’s donation will go a long way in enabling us to address health and safety of people in Europe and Asia as these situations evolve,” says Tiina Saarikoski, acting director of Finnish Red Cross International Operations and Programmes. Huhtamaki has also asked management teams across its 81

locations globally to reach out and see where they can lend a hand to the local community. “If there is anything this outbreak has emphasised, it is how

interconnected and dependent we are globally. Our initiative underlines our commitment to protecting people, food and the planet,” said Mr Héaulmé.
