VENDING ASSOCIATIONS
European Vending & Coffee Service Association (EVA)
Legislative priorities for vending progress
T
his month, the EVA is very active as a number of
key legislative dossiers make significant steps in the process. First up, the review
of the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations applying to refrigerated vending machines continues, with the EU Commission consulting on changes for the next version of the files. For us it is first of all key to have clarity on the machines that
are in scope of the Regulations, with particular focus on where smart fridges could/should fall. It is the EVA’s understanding that Smart Fridges may become a potential new product category, which could mean tailored policies and an energy consumption methodology for these machines. The EVA will develop shortly - together with an fellow European Association representing other refrigerated machine categories – a proposal for a definition for smart fridges that the EU Commission may use in its new Regulations. It feels as if the ink on the Packaging and Packaging Waste
Regulation (PPWR) has barely dried, but this month the EU Commission is starting the review of the related Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). The EVA will of course be responding to this first stage of the review process, and raising a number of important aspects for our sector. Not least, it’s overlapping and often confusing relationship with the soon-to-be-implemented PPWR, and the oftentimes haphazard national implementations. Other priorities this month include our ongoing campaign
for fair competition in our industry. An MEP has recently raised a written question to the EU Commission on our behalf to ask what steps are being taken to ensure active enforcement of European legislation in the vending industry to protect the safety of machine operators and end consumers. The Commission is required to answer by mid March, and we hope that this will provide a clear indication of how serious the Commission is taking this issue – particularly interesting with Venditalia coming up in May.
