CASHLESS & CONTACTLESS VENDING All-in-one Android payment devices

support this shift. By integrating the contactless reader, keypad and processing capability into a single unit, operators reduce the number of components that need to be shipped, installed and supported. Fewer parts typically mean less packaging, fewer product references to manage and simpler installation. Multi-component setups can add complexity across procurement, warehousing and maintenance, which over time can increase site visits and replacement logistics. Simplifying the hardware stack helps save time in the field, reduce handling across the supply chain and support more efficient estate management.

RELIABILITY WILL DEFINE WHAT COMES NEXT The next phase of vending will build on this foundation. Industry forecasts point to strong

growth across vending and unattended retail, driven by cashless payments and connected machines. The same payment technology is now being used in EV chargers, self-service kiosks and ticketing systems. Across all of these environments, the expectation is the same. Payments should work every time, without fuss. From our perspective, the focus is

straightforward. Build systems that stay online, test them in real conditions and resolve issues before the customer notices them. When the payment layer is reliable, operators protect revenue and customers keep coming back. For operators, the future of unattended

retail will not be decided by whether machines accept cards. That shift has already happened. The real difference will come from how consistently those payments work across thousands of transactions, every single day.

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST STATISTICS FROM THE VENDING & AUTOMATED RETAIL ASSOCIATION

• 65% of all machines are now fitted with cashless, up 10% from the previous year

• 72% of all transactions were cashless • Mobile usage is rising at 40% of all cashless transactions (just behind card at 52%)

• Cashless transactions were 93% higher in value vs cash

A gateway to smarter, connected payments

VMC managing director Nick Bate explores how cashless and contactless payment systems are continuing to evolve in 2026

The expansion of cashless and contactless payment systems shows no sign of slowing as we move through 2026. What began as a convenience has now become an expectation, with consumers actively seeking out fast, frictionless payment experiences wherever they shop. For operators, this shift represents far more than a simple payment upgrade, it is a gateway

to smarter, more connected and more profitable operations. The growth of mobile wallets and app-based payments continues and smartphones are no longer just payment devices; they are powerful engagement tools. In 2026, we predict seeing deeper integration between payment platforms, loyalty schemes, promotions and data

analytics. By linking transactions to digital rewards, personalised offers and real-time incentives, operators can turn a single tap into an ongoing customer relationship. This drives repeat purchases, increases average spend and builds long-term brand loyalty. Advances in hardware are also enhancing the user experience. Modern contactless readers are evolving beyond simple tap-and-go functionality. Full-colour screens, dynamic branded content, QR compatibility and touchscreen capabilities create a more interactive and intuitive transaction journey. These features allow operators to communicate directly with customers at the point of purchase, promote campaigns and differentiate their machines in competitive locations. Crucially, flexibility is key. As a hardware- agnostic provider, VMC recognise that no two operations are the same. Different environments, customer demographics and commercial objectives require tailored solutions. By working across multiple platforms and technologies, we can recommend and integrate the right payment solution for each client’s unique requirements and operational challenges.
