Feature: interview Trends and developments

in the refrigeration sector Tim Hutchinson, divisional manager at Liebherr UK provides an insight incorporating officially commissioned research.

What are consumers looking for? Looking to the future of the refrigeration sector there is a greater demand for appliances that have energy-saving capabilities, incorporate ‘freshness’ innovations that support the reduction of food waste, and have a longer life cycle in comparison to other white goods on the market. For retailers, it has never been more important to understand the long-term benefits of investing in premium appliances that incorporate these functionalities as a standard; adopting a ‘buy well to buy once’ mentality. At Liebherr, our primary ambition is to improve sustainability across all facets of the company, and ultimately participate in a circular economy. We feel a responsibility in our industry to drive technology and innovation to help meet these growing demands and are constantly striving to create products that are as sustainable as possible while also looking for ways to minimise our environmental impact and support the reduction of food waste through industry leading ‘freshness’ innovation. As one of the market leaders in refrigeration,

we’re proud to offer one of the largest ranges of A-rated appliances in the UK. In total, we have 30 products with an A or B energy efficiency rating. Committed to creating products that are built

to last, Liebherr has also recently introduced our new 10-year guarantee on select models; along with supplying spare parts for 15-years following the discontinuation of any models to further support product longevity and sustainability.

How Liebherr is catering to consumer demands? Aside from the sustainability and energy efficiency, our recent survey revealed there is a heightened awareness around the growing food waste crisis, which in turn has resulted in an increased consumer appetite to invest in appliances that can help combat it. *The survey revealed that one fifth (20%) of UK households are wasting on average 40 items of food per month. Top reasons are cited as: buying too much food (33%), closely followed by food not being stored correctly (31%). Of those respondents nearly three quarters of Brits (70%) said they would find it useful to have technology that keeps food fresh for longer in the fridge,

whilst also being energy efficient. * Liebherr’s ‘EasyFresh’, ‘HydroBreeze’ and

‘BioFresh’ technologies are at the forefront of freshness innovation, controlling the temperature and humidity of food to ensure long-lasting freshness and supporting the reduction of food waste in turn. By integrating intuitive sensor systems and Liebherr’s DuoCooling technology, Liebherr appliances are controlled using two completely independent cooling circuits that adapt an appliance’s cooling performance based on usage, reducing energy consumption, and ultimately saving on electricity bills. By being able to offer consumers appliances

that are not only energy efficient in output but incorporate ‘freshness’ technology, households will benefit in numerous ways; from improved sustainability and reduced waste to better economic efficiency.

* Research commissioned by 72point/OnePoll on behalf of Liebherr (August 2022) to 2,000 UK adults
