past 12 months of the pandemic when Britain’s 26,000 coffee shops were forced to close with the imposition of lockdown at the end of March 2020, sales of coffee machines rocketed as people stayed at home and worked from home – this trend is set to continue for the foreseeable future. “AO.com reported sales of coffee machines had increased by 412% after the announcement of the second lockdown in England on November 5, 2020 – the shutdown of coffee shops led to an explosion in demand for quality coffee machines.” Smeg’s Mr Davies says that coffee remains

on trend with not only coffee machines, but also accessories such as coffee grinders and milk frothers. He adds: “We will be launching a bean to cup coffee machine later this year, which has an exciting new look and is set to elevate our coffee offering.” Health and wellbeing is very much a key

trend and has been at the core of the sector growth. While the pandemic has been really tough, many people found themselves with more time on their hands and wanted to nurture themselves and their families by cooking from scratch, with healthy fresh produce, and educating themselves in the art of cooking, using kitchen appliances such as soup makers and mixers . “We see no indication that these trends

will reverse as life returns to normal,” says Mr Fredriksson from Morphy Richards. “Hygiene is another driver, with consumers

looking to ensure they do everything they can to keep their homes as clean and virus free as possible, which means floorcare products, and specifically steam cleaners will continue to be in demand.” With increased hygiene still front of mind,

Morphy Richards reports that its new Supervac Gold, 3-in-1 cordless vacuum cleaner, has been a big hit.

The evolution of microwaves Microwaves are often associated with fast cooking, providing a quick solution to home cooked meals for time-strapped consumers, but manufacturers have developed new technologies, meaning that they are more sophisticated than ever before. Kimberley Garner, Hotpoint’s brand manager, says: “The freestanding countertop Hotpoint

Supreme Chef multifunction microwave oven (MWH 338 SX) takes microwave cooking to a brand new level, benefitting from a range of clever technologies that do much more than just reheating and defrosting, enabling consumers to cook delicious dishes quickly and easily. “The Hotpoint Supreme Chef is a combination, multifunction microwave oven that guarantees the best cooking results, which are rich in taste and flavour, and features an unrivalled level of functionality.” Candy, meanwhile, has launched new retro-inspired microwaves, which it says offer a perfect

recipe of fun, design and smart functionality. Designed in Italy, Candy Divo microwaves are available in black and cream and come complete with eight automatic cooking programmes. The microwaves are compatible with the Candy Simply-Fi smart home app, which provides access to more than 100 dedicated recipes, cooking suggestions and tips. Catrin Davies, senior product manager for SDA at Candy, says: “Microwaves are often seen as a functional appliance, but the new Candy Divo models will inject style and fun into any showroom or shop floor. “The Candy Divo can help with most meals and even inspire people thanks to the recipes available in the accompanying app.”
