W
hirlpool UK Appliances has announced team Power Washing
Ranger from Sir Robert Pattinson Academy as the winner of its first-ever Purposeful Innovation competition. As part of the competition, secondary school
children were challenged to redesign a popular appliance to be more environmentally friendly, over the course of eight weekly sessions. Over 40 students attended the live final event
hosted at the World of Whirlpool centre in Peterborough to present their designs to a panel of expert judges, while taking part in a number of STEM-themed activities. Whirlpool UK awarded the winning team a bundle of fantastic prizes as a reward for their re-design of a washing machine to use both less water and energy.
Each member of the winning team has
received a new kitchen appliance of choice for their homes, as well as one appliance for their
winning team and the runners up are each able to choose a charity or community organisation which Whirlpool UK will donate an appliance to on their behalf. Ian Moverley, communications director
at Whirlpool UK Appliances, said the aim of Whirlpool UK’s Purposeful Innovation competition is to inspire the next generation of engineers to prioritise sustainability in engineering design. Mr Moverley said: “The winning team

More than 80% of space at IFA 2022 already booked up O
rganisers of IFA, which will take place at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, from
September 2-6, have announced that more than 80% of exhibition space has been booked. Kai Mangelberger, director of IFA 2022, said:
“With such diversity on show and by mirroring the entire market we are paving the way for a successful show for exhibitors and visitors alike. “The fact that exhibitor numbers are back to pre-pandemic levels, with Samsung in the
designed a new washing machine with two drums, which means that both a white wash and coloured wash can be done together, hence cutting down on the energy and water required for separate washes, while appealing to the modern day time-strapped consumer. “Other projects included a fridge that sinks under the floorboards to save energy, as it is colder underground, and a 3-in-1 eco-friendly washer, drier and clothes folder.”
CityCube Berlin, Panasonic in Hub 27 and LG in Hall 18 for example, and with the household appliances area almost fully booked, where companies including Bosch, Haier, Miele and Siemens are on the southern section of the grounds, shows that expectations for IFA 2022 are high.” With IFA Virtual, Messe Berlin is launching
a new B2B platform this month for arranging trade fair visits, networking and finding information. It will also contain a comprehensive
list of exhibitors and product highlights. Mr Mangelberger said: “We are pleasantly
surprised at the many registrations still being received at short notice. We will be working on the exhibitor lists and hall plans up to the last minute to ensure a place for every exhibitor and to perfect the hall interior for visitors.”
