Quooker highlights the boiling tap opportunity


for independents The boiling tap market is growing exponentially every year and shows no signs of slowing down. Simon King spoke to Stephen Johnson, managing director of Quooker, the brand leader is this dynamic sector

uooker was started in the Netherlands in 1970 and the brand is still owned


and managed by the founding family. After success in the home market, Quooker


came to the UK in 2006. This year, Quooker will sell 100,000 boiling tap in the UK. Stephen Johnson said: “The boiling top


market is an interesting sector. All different products, some boil, some don’t so it’s an interesting segment. “We deal with quite a few independent


electrical retailers. Because it needs installing and looking after, it’s a little bit different to other appliances, but we do see some of them making good traction with it. “We don’t stop people stocking it, but we


operate a service where we’re on a two-to- three-week lead time, so there’s not always a necessity for somebody stock it.” The majority of Quooker’s sales go through


the kitchen channel, where the boiling tap is sold as part of a new kitchen design.

“We tend to work with the electrical wholesalers for the retrofit market where somebody’s already got their kitchen and they want a tap; that’s typically transacted through an appliance wholesaler or reseller,” Mr Johnsons said. “Quooker is a really interesting product because it’s something that sells well with a kitchen; if you’re replacing your kitchen, then to install a Quooker along with the other appliances is something that lots of people do.” Mr Johnson said that the sector that Quooker


competes in is very interesting. “It’s one of the only appliances that actually


saves you time, energy and money – it’s an investment,” he said. “If you install a Quooker, although you’ve got the upfront capital cost of it, actually over its lifetime, it pays for itself in saving energy and water – it’s a device that has a payback. “What most people don’t understand is how inefficient a kettle is, both in terms of its
