Grow your profits with GYO innovations GIMA members unveil the latest grow-your-own product developments

Whether it’s keeping the kids entertained or looking to reduce food miles, grow-you- own is big business within garden retail. Here GIMA members outline the latest innovations and bestsellers that will help any garden centre maximise the incredible profit potential of this vast and varied product category. Fresh from its Best New Product Award win

at the Garden Press Event 2022, Wildlife World is forging ahead with its plastic-free gardening range of Natural Rubber Seed Trays. Ethically sourced, fair-trade, sustainable, and long- lasting, these trays are creating a new chapter within the grow-your-own category and are appealing to the ever-expanding group of eco- conscious consumers who are keen to start growing their own herbs and vegetables. Plastic-free is also shaping Burgon & Ball’s

2022 offering as Managing Director, Rainer Schubert explains: “The ‘Grow Your Own’ category has really taken off over the last few years, as people produce their own wholesome food and enjoy the wellness benefits of gardening. Our Essential Tools range includes a wide variety of plastic-free planting accessories in recyclable cardboard packaging. From wooden planting rulers to a top-selling paper pot-making kit, these items tap into the grow- your-own mood of the moment.” Elho has also brought to market new

innovations, most notably its Stack & Grow collection which is delivering retailers an opportunity to cater to the green-fingered consumers with limited outdoor space. The crates can be stacked horizontally, clipping together for a sturdy construction, providing the perfect solution for city dwellers to grow their own food thanks to its compact design. To promote optimum plant growth, the units were designed with large openings to provide sufficient light and oxygen, as well as drainage

holes to eliminate any excess water. The crates are available in two shades, leaf green and living black, which caters to multiple desired aesthetics. Elho’s Stack & Grow crates are

100% recyclable, with 85% of the materials used made from recycled plastic, catering to the ever-growing need for ethical buying options. A big part of the grow-your-own category is

growing media. New from Lava-Lite is Hydro- Gro+, a pH neutral, sustainable, 100% natural growing media for fruit and vegetable propagation. Used with or without soil, it encourages delicate root growth, beneficial bacteria, and microbe colonisation, whilst reducing the risk of soil borne diseases. Offering a high crop cycle with complete control, from seedling through to harvest, Lava Lite’s Hydro-Gro+ is available in handy one- and three- litre resealable pouches to assist with easier merchandising placement. Also making it easy for retailers is Taylors

Bulbs, which has introduced new Kids Grow Your Own Kits. These colourful grow kits feature attractive child friendly packaging and instructions designed to ‘Get Kids Growing’. There are three options in the range: Sunflowers, Strawberries and Tomatoes, supported with a suggested retail price of £5.99. Each kit contains a coloured zinc bucket (14cm x 12cm), peat-free compost, seeds, and instructions. New GIMA members, Willsow, are also

making it their mission to get kids growing with their first-of-a-kind plantable books. Never before have children had the opportunity to read a story, plant the pages and meet the main character! Each book has roughly 500 non-GMO seeds embedded into the cover pages, making Willsow books an exciting way for children to learn about food sourcing and

sustainability while getting lots of fresh air in the garden when planting their pages. Supporting grow-your-

own sales is British garden machinery manufacturer, Handy. The company’s newest introduction, the Webb WEV20TL Tiller – part

of the new Handy Webb 20V Cordless

Range - is powered by a 20V 2Ah battery to make light work of cultivating soil. This new Tiller comes in distinct Webb packaging and is supported by branded point of sale material, a selection of wooden plinths and metal wall bay stands, which provide strong branding, clear pricing and product specification suited for grow your own displays, and easy access to stock. Elsewhere, Thorndown paints has addressed

the cosmetic needs of grow-your-own enthusiasts. Recognising that many will own a timber greenhouse or potting shed, planters or raised beds, or all the above in an allotment or garden, Thorndown has launched six new wood paints within its Somerset Heritage Colour Collection to help timber garden products look good and to make them last a lifetime. Finally, Brinsea is repositioning its chicken

incubators to help retailers better understand how grow-your-own and poultry ownership often go hand in hand, especially considering the ongoing growth of households keeping domestic fowl, up from 400,000 in 2020 to over 1.2 million just 12 months later. Brinsea’s new Maxi 24 Advance Incubation

Starter Pack provides everything needed to start ‘growing your own’ chickens. Brinsea incubators offer reliability and practicality, along with superior hatch rates time after time. All incubators are made in UK and come with a three-year guarantee.
