Safety in the EV charging landscape

A

recent roundtable on electric vehicles (EVs), hosted by campaigning charity, Electrical Safety First and leading trade body, the Electrical Contractors Association, included the fi rst-ever mapping of the UK’s EV charging landscape with a spotlight on safety. The EV roundtable attracted a wide range of representatives, from car manufacturers to housing associations, as well as trade and industry bodies, including Distribution Network Operators, in addition to consumer organisations. This collaborative event included independent research from the ECA, which helped form part of the safe- charging map for EVs.

Discussions raised a number of signifi cant issues, W-JAN19-LASNEK:Layout 1 10/12/2018 11:14 Page 1

including potential safety issues and the strain on the distribution network operators (DNO), as approximately a third of home EV charge point installations are not notifi ed with the DNO. Representatives stressed the importance of further education for, and engagement with, the industry – as well as the consumer. There was also broad agreement that a joined-up, national and local government infrastructure strategy was essential. Electrical Safety First is keen to collaborate with a range of relevant bodies to help establish such an approach. It will also be using the information gathered from the EV roundtable to inform the development of its strategic priorities and recommendations for national and local government.

IBMG expands electrical wholesale division

Independent Builders Merchant Group’s (IBMG) electrical division has announced the opening of its latest Grant & Stone electrical wholesaler, located on Tallon Road, Brentwood, Essex - its third new branch in three weeks

The new Brentwood store is located close to two major transport routes into London, with easy access for the M25 and the A12. It joins another Essex Grant & Stone electrical wholesaler in Romford, which opened earlier in the month, and increases the network of IBMG’s specialist electrical wholesale branches to 24 across the South of England.

The Brentwood branch increases the division’s geographic reach and forms part of a large expansion plan designed specifi cally to complete gaps in its branch network, with further branch openings planned in the coming weeks.
