PIR plus profits A

Presence and absence detection: Timeguard has it all covered

utomatic PIR switching will be in demand more than ever with the way energy prices are going, and it can be a profitable business with the latest generation of ceiling-mounted PIRs. Leading the way are new Timeguard devices that offer more user-friendly control and capacity to control even more lighting with a single PIR switch – all at prices that will please your customers. Nice to think you can avoid having to sell at the low-margin end of the market and provide superior solutions. The end-result is that we, as an industry, can ensure that end-users get the working environment they need plus the benefit of energy efficiency that is all too important with ever higher energy costs. Everyone is happy.

Most people will be familiar enough with the basics of what PIR automatic switching devices can do, but are you still selling basic specs or are you and your installer customers profiting from advances in technology? The days of simply detecting relatively big movements are long gone. Today’s affordable ‘extras’ include the accuracy of both motion detection and presence detection, and where the manufacturer has really invested into the latest technology on higher end models, the extra functionality of absence detection. Naturally, the Timeguard ranges cover all the bases here making them easy to stock, and easy to sell.

Presence detection is fully automated – where switching on and off are both done without user intervention. They will be mainly installed/used in areas that are likely to have regular and/or high people traffic, and that have the most likelihood of lighting or HVAC otherwise being left on in empty spaces, especially where there is limited natural light. Presence detection provides that extra level

of sensitivity that will sense someone who is hardly moving at all – the most common example probably being someone sitting at an office desk making only small hand movements. The accuracy of presence detection means that lighting and HVAC are switched off only when users are really gone. This is good news when we remember the old days of being plunged into darkness and having to wave at the detector!
